I got this television around March 2008 was receiving the tests transmission
RTE,RTE2 the usual and radio and was it was very clear.
    until it changed to mp4

I am getting a black screen and sound only
does this mean my television will not be able to receive future
    programs from rte using digital

Obviously its digital tuner is MPEG2, not 4. Perhaps there might be a CAM slot in the side, into which you can slot a decoder card (like what I've done with a pair of Sonys here)? No reason that you might need a seperate decoder box- if you have a CAM slot......

One of these should do the job.

this device converts Transcode MPEG4 transmission into MPEG2
will I be losing HD picture resolution ?

In theory yes. There isnt much that inferior about MPEG 2 when compared with MPEG 4. MPEG 4 is just far more efficient when it comes to video quality per bit/sec. So I would assume that they would use a high MPEG 2 bitrate as it is not being broadcast over the air, so spectrum effieciency is not required, but rather just being sent to the tuner.

MPEG 2 using a high enough bitrate with have a better picture than MPEG4 using a low bitrate.

I'm not sure how much encoding artifacts you will get however. Perhaps smccarrick would be able to inform us..

.... they only convert to SD. They dont handle HD as far as I know.

Anyhow the RTE transmissions are MPEG4 H264 SD.

As regards loss..... transcoding is recoding.

I'd look for a replacement, but you may have to pay the difference. No excuse for retailers not to be up-to-date, this was known by CEDA surely see:n http://www.digitaltelevision.ie/NR/rdonlyres/BFED0C82-501B-42E0-8F38-0789EA604497/0/MinimumReceiverRequirementsforDTTinIrelandv10.pdf which was on the site by March this year.
This advisory was issued in February on http://www.digitaltelevision.ie

CEDA had an advisory note about this at: http://www.digitaltelevision.ie/NR/rdonlyres/4D228F0E-3207-4AC5-84BB-1EDBAC4313BD/0/CEDADTTGuidanceNotesFINAL14Feb2008.pdf

The tv is working grand. It isn't defective. You wont get far with that idea.

I argued that they should have left just the 4 main channels as mpeg2 for a few years- not many people thought the same. It's not just about capacity and technology but also availability. I know it is still only a trial but how long do they need. As license payers in 2008 we should have access to digital that we don't have to pay for.

Do you notice any increase/decrease in picture quality since mpeg2?

The only difference I noticed the picture takes longer to be displayed
    when I change channel,
and I think it was slighty better picture with MPEG2
using the samsung own Tuner decoder.
