Im thinking of joining the army band in the coming months. I have the application forms and blurb, but is there anyone out there who can fill me in on any of the details on day to day routine, what happens after initial enlistment. Thanks:)

Not being a smart arse, but why don't you ring them and ask!.

Seriously, and it will prepare you somewhat for the interview too.

    Btw, you'll always be a non-combatant.

Well you don't get more 'inside' than ringing and chatting with someone in the job!.

Sorry I can't be more helpful

Aren't they trained as battlefield medics as well?

No I dont think so...they are regarded as technicians whose only duty is music. They dont do basic training and seem to be mostly seperate from the regular recruits. Im kind of wondering about the age profile and if there are many more women in it and am interested in hearing anyone elses experience of it.

Hello, My son just passed his audition for Army bandsman. I will tell you what I know about the position. This position is unique in that you have to audition and you find out if you pass BEFORE you enlist. My son went to goarmy.com and found the bands page where he filled out the info and a Band Liason contacted him. He emailed him the audition requirements and when my son was ready to take the AFQT and ASVAB he went to a recruiter and gave him the Band liasons contact. My son took the written tests and the physical. When he passed those then the audition was set up. The band liason flew out from Texas and auditioned my son, he found out on the spot that he passed, he will go to MEPS on Monday and sign his contract and swear in. Then they will tell him which bands have openings for his intrument (guitar). He will attend basic combat training just like all soldiers do. Then he will attend the Army School of Music in Norfolk Virginia for 6 months, then he will report to his band. Alot of people dont realize that bands get deployed too. They have been sending bands to Iraq and Afghanistan since early on. I cant answer questions about life as a bandsman yet as my son is just signing on but if you have questions about the audition requirements or anything else I will try to help you. I feel that choosing to share your talent with our troops is a noble decision and every forum Ive found on it I read over and over how people LOVE what they do, they get paid for doing what they love and they get to serve their country at the same time!

    Hi Armymon,
I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to write all those details for me. As you rightly say in your second message I was enquiring about Army bands in Ireland. Im still trying to find information but thanks anyway. I hope your son is happy and doing well.
    Best regards
