Absolutely petrified but need to go to the dentist

    Hi all

I had a really bad experience the last time I was at the dentist and am so scared about going back. It's now 7 years since I was there and I have let it get so bad now that I will need serious work done. It's my own fault as a filling fell out, I left it. I broke a bit of a tooth, left that. I brush and floss every day but I really need to get to the dentist and get all my teeth sorted out

So, are there any compassionate dentists out there in either City Centre or Northside of Dublin? The last thing I want is a lecture from a dentist and him or her to be so mad at me that they will scare me again.

I'm sure some of you think I deserve this, but I cant even begin to explain the fear I have when I walk in that door. If I dont go soon, I'll probably end up with dentures so want to sort this out once and for all

Appreciate your help on this, and sorry for the rant

    Hiya

In 1998 I went to a dentist who in all fairness didn't know (and neither did I ) that I had a high tolerance for the anaesthetic they use, and proceeded to try to give me a filling whilst I felt it all.

It took me until three years ago (2005)to go back to a dentist, recommended by six people as he was good with nervous patients, and since then I have had six fillings and two root canals, and not felt a thing, at the end of my treatment he was great, congratulated me on getting through it, everything.

He's in Dublin 1, if you want his details pm me, I cannot recommend him highly enough I have horrid teeth and without him, I'd have even mankier teeth.

Good luck, I know just how you feel :)

Twice Iv needed to visit an emergency dentist...once in Finglas...really nice guy there, very calm,soothing...made me feel very comfortable.
In fact it was all over before I even knew e did anything( a filling).

The clinic is at the rear of Superquinn.

I posted this in the "phobias" forum before we had a dental one I think.Anyway after seeing this dentist Im totally over my fear of dentists.
Used to have a huge phobia of dentists ever since I was younger and got a tooth broken during a routine extraction--I had to have the rest of the broken tooth removed surgically and that was the most horroble experience ever.

It was so bad that I couldnt even get a cleaning once a year.

A friend of mine pointed me in the direction of a dentist who specialised in patients with phobias.
The way he did it was to start me off with valium to relax me before visits..there were times I was so out of it that he could have taken my head off and I wouldnt have cared.

He gradually weaned me off the dosage of valium(over 10-12 visits in a short space of time) till eventually I was taking a placebo before visits(which I didnt even know I was taking)

I can go to visits now without any panic attacks.

Its a huge relief when you do get over these things and realise that its an unfounded fear of the unknown.
