Ive done a fair bit of clay pigeon shooting this year. Ive been using my fathers old under and over game gun and this can be a bit of a strain on the aul shoulder.

I think its time to upgrade. My preferred disipline is DTL. What kind of gun do ye recommend for a not so big budget (around the 800-1000 mark.)

I will be grateful for yere help.

JW is right. If the gun doesn't fit then it will hurt like hell, you'll miss lots of clays and end up frustrated with the sport. Also a game gun is much lighter than a trap gun and it doesn't absorb the recoil in the same way the heavier trap gun does.

You should be able to pick up a half decent second hand trap gun within your budget. The one piece of advice I would give you is - make sure the gun fits. Go to as many shops, shooting grounds as you can and try as many as you can. Don't just settle for the first nice one you see. If you can, get a coach or an experienced shooter to check the fit before you buy. There's a list of caoches here - http://www.icpsa.ie/coaching/coach_find/553.html

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of things that go BANG! :)

Local club clay shoots. Im about 20 miles east of city so mightnt be much help to you.

I also have my own clay trap and a few of my neighbours come to the house most weekends for a few shots and a bit of craic.

If youre looking to get into clay shooting you could contact the ICPSA (icpsa.ie). Other than that i cant be much help to you

If you want to shoot DTL and only DTL or similiar a trap gun 3/4 and full is an option and you should get a second hand for around 1000

I shoot both DTL,Ball Trap, skeet and sporting and do so quite comfortably with my Bettinsoli Supersport 30 inch barrell multi choke, this gun is good value.

A good semi in a sporter set up might be a way to go if recoil is an issue however as discussed they are frowned on at registered shoots very popular at flappers and a good field gun.

I started out shooting clays with a Benelli automatic but eventually went and got a dedicated clay gun, I have an auto for the field and skeet
