This might have been covered here already, but today I witnessed an example of forward thinking, inter agency cooperation and general cop on. It has left me in an awful state, so much so that I need a drink to calm myself down and return to a semblence of normality.

The rails for the Luas extension to Citywest have been laid across the newly opened section of the outer ring road. I stopped the car and got out. As I stood looking in amazement, I could feel my eyes swelling up and tears began to gently roll down my reddened cheeks. Could it be true? Was it a mirage? Positive and negative, former and latter. This event had unfolded before my eyes. It was a living reality. Traffic on the outer ring road will not be disturbed when construction starts. Some saint somewhere in authority had displayed initiative.

It is trully a momentous day.

    Don't worry. I'm sure they'll find a reason to redo it. :D

Yeah perhaps pics of a squishy sleeping bag session would ruin Commuting/Transport!

I think that is the most pleasant bit of rail related news ever unvieled on this forum. In fact it's probably the only positive exclusive news I'd ever read here.

Fair play to the RPA or SDCC or whoever though one step ahead - it's nearly like watching a child's first step hearing that someone somewhere in officialdom has done something right

    Simple but beautiful

Chris, you aren't talking about your man with the banjo in Fáilte Towers last night are you?! Nah, it wasn't Derek

    Yeah, saw that.

It was mentioned in another thread, and a similar sense of shock was conveyed.

Surely there must be some small scope left for fcuk-up somewhere though. :)

Ok here it is at last. This photo is of the luas tracks embedded in the new section of the outer ring road near citywest. The photo is taken looking towards Tallaght. The cars in the background are on the new section of the outer ring road linking the N7 and N81. A very rare example of forward thinking in Ireland and means the road won't have to be dug up when construction of the Luas extension to Citywest/Saggart starts.

We should have a party to celebrate.:D

I find hot sugary tea works for shock, myself.

Strangely I wondered too if the gauge was correct.

Ok Derek - I'm impressed but this can only mean one thing - the City West Luas will never be built.

I'm 49 and in my lifetime this section of track and the new station at Adamstown are the only two pieces are are forward planning that I can recollect. The nonsensical Green line extension from Sandyford via the Dublin Mountains is more typical of 'Irish' planning. How in God's name can anybody turn that section into a Metro at a future date? What was wrong with the original Stillorgan/Carrickmines alignment? Why not continue all the way to Shanganagh and bite the bullet and CPO any property in the way? :D:D

Phoenix Park station is forward planned too - for devleopment thats never likely to happen now!

And those roads for the Amgen that never happened in Cork ;)

Come to think of it - we're great at preparing for stuff that doesn't happen - the 'spare' junction number and gap for the M7 extension to the M50 is another I remembered.

MYOB, you are clearly out of the loop. I happen to know that all of those projects will be cornerstones of Transport22.:D

I'm not impressed one bit. Why couldn't the tracks dip under the junction or have a bridge over the junction so the Luas wouldn't have to interrupt traffic?
