Sniper Scopes and Rubber.

I was watching Weaponology on Discovery the other day, talking about the evolution of snipers, rifles etc.

They mentioned an incident where the Brits (In World War 1) were short of decent telescopic sights for their snipers so they came up with the idea of using the Swiss as intermediaries for the transfer of German telescopic sights to the Brits in return for rubber.

The Germans eventually pulled out of the deal as they didn't fancy getting all their officers killed, funnily enough.

Is this true, old wives tale? Any other examples of this weird stuff.

Reminds me of Catch 22 where the Germans paid the lads to bomb their own airbase.
