Would this machine be able to handle Crysis and other new games that might be released over the next two or three years?

The clock rate is a little on the slow side. The RAM is slow, only 667MHz rather than the more usual 1066MHz.

SLI 8800's is expensive and 2 generations out of date, get a single GTX260 or AMD 4850 or higher.

The Ageia PhysX unit is redundant since PhysX support is pointless in general, and being added to Nvidia cards from September onwards.

Yeah it would handle crysis alright, but the cpu is a bit underwhealimg. For 2.6k you can build a monster gaming pc that will handle anythign you throw at it. Check out the building and upgrading forum.

    <-- see it there somewhere.

Am more interested in a desktop replacement laptop to be honest, rather than a new desktop - if the XPS is not the place to look, where can you find a true desktop replacement in the laptop world?

I dont think it exists for any reasonable price tag. If it did none of us would be using desktops

I mean when you say "I want a crysis laptop thats futureproof for 3 years" Youre really saying "I have over $3,000 that I dont want to spend on coke and hookers"

Why is the mobility a factor for you OP?

Thought i'd throw this in the mix. All for € 710. Should keep you going for a while.

    Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AL1065)

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor

    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB ATA-100 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500630A)

    Asus ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)

    Sub Total : £477.95
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £8.95
VAT is being charged at 17.5% VAT : £85.21

Not a bad price if you ask me. I forgot the DVD-RW drive, but can pick one up for extra 30 odd euro on OC.co.uk.

    Hope this helps.

My mate has XPS laptop, and plays crysis. Not bad performance but hense you HAVE to sit beside a plug ( all the time )... hehe

if you want to see jaw dropping I stumbled upon Falcon Fragbooks when I was shopping last year...I havent decided which is more shocking, how much they can cram into a laptop or the price tags.

But it gives you a feel for what you can hope for in a laptop. Honestly you're pretty high on the food chain with 2 8800GTX.

Regarding the ram it could be faster but 667 is fine.

However for the extra few hundred get a few years of Accidental Cover. Youll be so happy later when you crack that pretty screen.

Or you could rationalise, get a well-performing mid ranger for half the price now and upgrade again in 2 years. That would make more sense to me than going past the 1500 euro zone.

Would you consider a small form factor PC such as a shuttle: PC in a shoebox sized case?

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-100-SH&groupid=701&catid=110&subcat=&name=Shuttle%20XPC%20SX38P2%20Pro%20Black%20Barebones%20System%20Intel%20Core%202%20Duo/Quad%20(LGA775)

Not a laptop. but a PC you can fit in a backpack. Has the advantage if taking full sized desktop components i.e. real gfx cards...

You can get it for less if you use the EPP and a 10% discount. Its a pretty powerful machine.

A new model is due out shortly, with Centrino 2 and Nvidia 9-series card.

Sager/Clevo also offer hugely expensive/powerful/heavy 'laptops' if thats your thing. Check some of their stockists/re-sellers like Kobalt to get an idea:
