    hi Molly,

If you know your birth mothers name and the one you were given at birth then it should be a bit easier to find your original birth cert. The UK birth records seem to be much better that ours. You can probably do a search on their online records for the sake of a couple of Euro. It'd also be interesting to see how your adoption was dealt with in that I would assume that as you were born in Scotland technically you'd probably be a foreign adoption. They may not have been that strict on this at the time though given that your mother was Irish and you came straight back.

    Best wishes

    Martin

    Hi,

I think the only route to get information that may lead you to your birth cert is to go to the agency or possibly the adoption board as you are dealing with two different jurisdictions and its usually hard enough dealing with 1:).

hi, the adoption agency on south annes street is cunamh formally the catholic protection and rescue society.
why don,t you contact them and ask for your non id information this will give you your mothers first name and the name she called you at birth, from there you will be able to find your own birthcert but don,t tell them thats why you want it.
    the address is cunamh
    cprsi house
    30 south anne street
    dublin 2 ph 6779661

    fax 6770235 email cunamh@dol.ie

Hi Molly it's through the General Registrars Office, most of which is on-line. You can also request that GRO staff do a search for you.

    http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/

You may find its easier to find yourself than you think, they used to keep a separate book of adoptions, which might make tracking down your data a lot easier.

    Good luck.

    hi molly dolly,
if i remember correctly your mother was from ireland, i think your next step is to head to the birth deaths and marraige records room it,s in the irish life mall in dublin ( someone correct me if it,s moved back to joyce house)
they hold all the records for births deaths and marraiges in the south of ireland.
firstly i would try to look for a marraige cert that would give you her name before marraige, if you can,t find that then look for her birthcert with the name you have and you can also look up the childs birthcert that would also have her name before marraige.
    good luck .......kathy

    Kathy is right.

The General Registry Office Reading Room is still in the Irish Life Mall on Talbot Street.

Your first job is to find your mother's original birth cert. As the children of married couple's are ineligible for adoption under the 1954 legislation- I would work on the initial assumption that the name you have for your mum is her maiden name.

Births are registered under the mother's maiden name (indeed its how an adopted person would search for their own birth certs in the first instance- as the registered surname for the mother and child would both be the same). You obviously will at this point (after confirming with your mother's original birth cert) have her maiden name- which will make getting the birth cert for your sibling (if they were born here!!!) incredibly easy.

Once you have the original cert- next you'd move over to the Adopted Childrens Register (which is not on open display to the public and will have to be requested seperately at the desk). Its in about 4 volumes (depending on the version they have there) and here you are looking to match up birthdates. You will probably get a couple of matches- make sure you go through all the books. One of these matches will be your sibling (if they were adopted in the Irish Republic).

At this stage- I'd get onto Julie Kerrins and get her to start confirming information- threatening to go knocking on doors is normally a good way of getting them to get their arses into gear........

Do post back if you need any pointers or other help,

    Shane
