Motor Tax for Occasional Use Vehicle

The new motor tax system penalises high performance / high emission vehicles.

I drive a low emissions vehicle as my daily driver, but I have been looking into buying a second car, a high performance car.

When I buy the second car, chances are I am going to have to pay €2,000 per annum in motor tax. Because I have to pay over €166 per month to tax the vehicle, I will be more likely to want to drive the car every day, in order to justify the €2,000. Therefore it may become my daily driver.

The amount of revenue that the government will collect based on the motor tax will remain the same, but I will be emitting more CO2 (for the purpose of the argument I am ignoring any duty or VAT that the government will collect on the fuel).

If the motor tax was based on a pay per use (by targeting the fuel), or there was a different rate of motor tax for occasional use vehicles (similar to the classic motor tax, with a requirement that it is a second car and a limited mileage) then this would result in less revenue being collected, but most importantly it would be better for the environment! ;)

Anyone think the greens might take up on this idea? :D

its not about Co2, its about revenue and Europe.

The old trick of trying to declare it 'off the road' won't work SOME of the cops have ANPR a while now. I've a garda mate that told me my reg was flagged several times

John Gormley has decided changed the motor tax rates to suit people like yourself who decide to keep the gas guzzler off the road - oh no wait, he hasn't!

    For what?

They should try a touch of the old ANPR on their own personal cars ;)

I did nothing wrong , The Car was spotted at various locations by ANPR it would appear they record these on the PULSE now!!!

I was given a location and datestamp of where my car had been 'snapped'

Meh, it would only encourage clocking / disconnecting speedo cables to get around it.

Load the fuel and scrap road tax / VRT ftw - it'll never happen though.

Agree. Don't see why it couldn't be revenue neutral tbh. It would certainly seem to fit in with the green's 'the polluter pays' rhetoric.

The only problem I see is that the fuel smuggling 'industry' would become huge.

Europe was kickin up about our VRT regime, so we changed it in such a way that it benefits ONLY those who can afford a new car

Just buy something pre '08 and you'll be taxed on the old cc system. Bit of a saving there.

Meh. TBH none of this is surprising. The change was based on utility, not ideals. The notion that that the change's purpose was to reward 'grener' drivers is misleading, of course. The actual purpose is to change the emissions profile of new cars being brought into the country, and there's nothing wrong with that, provided nobody tries to pretend that it's fair.

    We should all buy 2007 RX8's. €300 a year to tax, and 284 g/km CO2. That's show em!
Wait. They'd have us on fuel tax then, wouldn't they.
    Ah well

Unfortunatly dude you are stuck in a country were it is now even more expensive to own a new High Performance car. owning a high power car is now only for the rich and no longer the motor euthusiasts.

My advice.... Leave. I know I am

Do what I did (and am doing again). Buy a Vintage car.

I know there's a bit more work involved, but some fast cars can be got/made (Ford Escort with a Duratec or Cosworth, or what I plan to do, Ford Granada with a Small Block Ford V8, 5litre!)....

    Then, sit back and enjoy...

€560 actually, but still cheaper than €2,000
