Petrol prices are falling

Anyone noticed the sharp enough falls in petrol prices at some petrol stations? I saw one at 1.23 euros for a litre of unleaded today on the Malahide road in Dublin and its been dropping practically every day for the last two weeks. The price of a barrel of oil is plummeting and now stands at $118 dollars a barrel today - down from $145 a couple of weeks ago.

I dont know about the rest of you but im making it my business to buy at the station's the petrol is cheapest. It may sound like penny pinching to some but you should not buy anywhere where the petrol is still above 1.30 euros a litre. Thats just profiteering at that station. There is no excuse for petrol to be that expensive anymore and the price of petrol could and should drop much more over the coming weeks as the price of oil seems to be plumeting atm. Some good news for once. Good news for the economy :)

I got a great idea for a website, where people post up the price of petrol in their local stations, and people can judge for themselves and go for the cheapest petrol.

Turns out it's already been done.

I heard a snippet on the wireless about somebody calling for an official compulsory version of pumps.ie. The idea is that petrol stations have to log their prices on this website every time they make an adjustment.

For some reason this news is too good for the newspapers! I dreaded buying a Sunday paper over the last months with all the doom and gloom and now there's a chance of good news and they don't want to know, too busy giving out about Eircom, ESB and Gas going up and record level of redundancies and companies going in to liquidation. Yes there is a lot of bad news, but please, give us some respite and report the good news too.

There are tougher diesel emmission laws in california which leads to more refining of diesel fuel thus leading to increased prices.

Petrol stations should tell them to go fup themselves. Why should everywhere that sells stuff not have to do the same so?

Good point but it encourages competition imo. Maybe they should make it voluntary. Then the cheapest places would get free advertising and the other might follow suit.

Ya but the thing is some stations bought them at €1.30 and they can't sell it cheaper till its all been used. Not profiteering but unlucky...

So what your saying is they should sign up to a system that lowers their prices? I can see them flockign to sign up voluntarily.

Well if say Tesco are selling the cheapest petrol going and a new government sponsored website displaying petrol prices springs up and gets a lot of news coverage, I would expect Tesco would want their low prices evident on the site. Otherwise some other supplier who sell more expensive petrol would be on the site and would appear to be the cheapest.

So it only takes one to sign up before the others feel obliged to follow.

Now if Tesco and Shell and Maxol etc. were all to sit down and agree to boycott the new site, well that would look a bit like a cartel imo.

Aye but I will wary to see them passing it on when they buy the oil at lower prices.

Thing is, oil on the market is bought on a three month advance, so it's foolish of them to respond to CURRENT market trends.

It's their own fault, however. Oil goes up, prices go up immediately too. This is Karma to those who were profiteering.

Think you are totally missing the point here Stekelly with all due respect. Filling stations with lower prices will inevitably sell more fuel...a lot more. This is the case with any product or service but more especially with petrol or diesel at the moment perhaps with the cost being so high presently. Thus the filling stations with lowest prices sell a lot more fuel and make higher profits than those with high fuel prices as a result... simple really. So in that regard it may be good for the retailers who are competitive and ultimately good for the motorist which is surley to be encouraged.

That does not stop them when the price goes up

If it were that simple they'd all be falling over themselves to be the cheapest. It wouldnt need a new website to make it happen. They charge what they can get away with. There ar eplenty of cases of petrol stations within 100 yards of each other with 2 or 3 c in the difference.

It's the point of one solid basis of advertisement of fuel prices, where the cheapest guy gets the spot. It's not a complex concept...

To be fair about it I dont see if theres a whole lot of difference between a website reporting petrol/ diesel prices and prices being displayed on the outside the filling station. Its all public information. Either way its all advertising if you like at the end of the day and the customer is just as likely to decide on which filling station to use based on signs displaying prices outside filling stations as they would be from using a website. A pound to a penny the guys selling fuel for that few cent more within 100 yards of cheaper priced filling stations are selling a lot less in comparison with something as price sensitive as petrol and diesel is, particularly at the moment when the price is comparatively high. Do they get away with charging what they want it if the don't sell any petrol or diesel? The only guys who will have quams about it are those charging too much and are uncompetitive in the first place and they should shut up or put up with it anyway. In this already highly regulated economy it would be no harm if an essential comodity such as petrol and diesel are somewhat regulated perhaps.

Ihave no problem with websites listing prices. The issue I have is with making it compulsory for petrol stations to submit their prices.
