iPhone 3G - connecting to web

Apologies if this is a stupid question or has been covered elsewhere...

I got an iPhone 3g, and have it signed up to my work and home wifi networks. However, I find that I'm unable to connect to the internet when away from these networks - i.e. 3g doesn't seem to kick in as it would on the N95.

I've had a play about with the setting and can't see what i'm doing wrong.

    Any suggestions?

    What network are you on?
Are you using the SIM card that came with the phone?
Has it (the internet) ever worked over the phone network?
Does the network have 3G / Edge coverage in your area?
Does the SIM work in another phone?
Have you tried your networks data support helpline ?

I'm on O2, and it's the SIM that came with the phone. It seems to recognise O2 3G as the default network, and I was on O2 3G previously with an N95, and it had no problem finding the network at home / work / on the bus. I'll give O2 a call and see what they suggest - the switch on was painful and poorly handled, so it's possible that they've just forgot to enable 3G or something.
