I am a 22 year old trying to get into the classic cars.
I have a thing for american cars but i cant get insurance handy so i am wondering if you guys know any cars i might get insurance on.
My biggest problem is engine size any american car 30 years old have 5ltr engines:eek: doesnt bother me but the insurance companys dont want to here of it. so then i tryed looking at modern american cars but only in the early 90s did they start makin small engines.
if all else fails ill probably get a classic mercedes or volvo with around 2ltr engines.

You'll be doing well to get insurance on any car more than 20 years old. I struggled to get insurance for my Golf and I'm 24 with Full license and some ncb

Wasn't there a young lad on here a while back who had a Oldsmobile Cutlass or something?

Insurance will be a major problem with anything classic id think, most classic policies have an age limit of 25 or 26,and even then it usually has to be a second car,i doubt anyone will insure a 22 year old in a 5 or 6 litre car??

Also you usually need a 3yr NCB

If you are just trying to get into classics I wouldn't start with an American car - you'll have hassle getting parts etc. The price of petrol would mean you would be broke with them big engines drinking mad!!

I got my first classic last year at 24 just over a year ago, I too wanted a Trans am (haha) I ended up with a mini. I love the car - it started as a 998cc auto but its now a 1430cc Manual beast, but thats another story.

Go for something more common to start, check for clubs in your area etc.

Best of luck with your classic search

Good advice. Get something simple to work on and that parts are cheap for.

The car is going to break your heart anyway (they all do i think), but best not break your wallet if you can avoid it...

    you speak the truth
i still cant believe how expensive classic cars can be
€10000 for garage,€4000 insurance nealy €2000 roadtax not 30 year classic yet, €4000 for the car itself, spareparts and maintenance €1000,then theres petrol costs.

    i think i need a new hobby:confused:

Buy British you will never have a problem sourcing parts (mechanical or body panels) and they can be fixed with a basic toolkit (rust in a different matter of course so find a good un (bring a magnet)).

Stuff like an MG or Spitfire can be picked up cheap enough, about 4 grand as it happens and if less than 30 can still be taxed without killing you.

    Mike.

True,my uncle can still get most of the bits(mechanical anyway) for his wolseley 6/110 these days, and thats a pretty rare car..
And id say it would be possible to build a brand new MGB these days, with no old parts whatsoever used.

That is what I did last yr (when I was 24)

The value of them has taken a fair hammering though on ebay I think in the past few months... as in 2000 will buy you something very clean.

They are a good car to start with though, Simple, parts are easy enough to get (a lot easier than an MGF by all accounts!) and by and large they are reliable since most seem to be running late Sierra engines at the like at this stage.

As regards American Cars,I think the Cevrolet Caprice is a beauty.
But it would cost a fortune to import, insure etc.
    I found a beautiful Mercedes E230 on carzone,check it out. . . . . http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Mercedes-Benz/230/E230-W123/1115623/

    A bit pricy though

Nice looking car. Big enough money I suppose, but if it is clean, then is probably worth it. It seems to have a lot of MkIII trim... all the window surrounds should be chrome.

The 1.6 won't break any records.

Check for rust, esp the front struts, rear spring hangers, A posts, rear arches, front wings...... actually everywhere....

They are a wonderful car, if you like lego you will love a capri, so many interchangable parts from the ford parts bin.

Will it break my heart though.

Im by no means a car export. dont mind giving things a bash and my thinkering to date hasnt been a disaster.

with cheap tax no nct and small engine id probably take a punt at the price.

when you say MK III trim is that a bad thing??

Sorry to throw cold water on this but remember you won't be able to insure and drive it for another 3 years.Do you have a garage to keep it in? An unfinished project might be an idea.

This has potential in my book...and cheap too!!!

    check www.odon.ie
they would insure me in a 2.8 capri when i was 23 and had a full license

re capri above, for 4k i think it would pay to bring a mechanic to look at it, be on the look out for rust! that goes for any classic though really
