How much was the package worth? If it was over €40 (IIRC) then it was customs.

think it was only like €42 euro! 65ish with shipping!

Customs takes the value of the package + shipping so it sounds like you got stung.

Ouch! That sounds like customs fees alright!

    Who delivered it?

Don't use the boys in brown as they apply the duty charge irrespective of declaration.
Got stung a while back on a motorcycle puncture repair kit from the states.

Also got stung on a genuine present, a 40 dollar jacket!

Yep, they add on their own fee's also. Fedex are as bad.

Personally I prefer USPS if I'm buying stuff from the states. It's the cheapest and usually the fastest. Plus it's dealt with by An Post once it gets into the country.

I don't know about anyone else but UPS have fupped up my deliveries so many times it's not funny. "I'm sorry, we thought your address was wrong so we were waiting for you to call and confirm it."

Not bein' a smartar$e but did you not ask them what the €12 was for? :)

When I got stung, the docket did say that the added charge was for customs.

Very true, also for deliveries to work.
This has happened even with a mobile and landline contact numver clearly printed on the address label, aaarrrgh!!!!!!!!

Yet anything from amazon seems to get to me double quick?????

Anything over €22 is liable to be hit. €45 for a gift.

As mentioned, they take shipping into account when looking at the value.

The shipping co. can also charge a 'handling fee', because of the fact that they've already cleared the item for you (ie payed the customs already on your behalf)...so they charge you for this service. Is usually only few quid, but on a cheap purchase, can make up a big % of the overall cost.

Its just the way it goes. Sometimes you don't get hit, sometimes you do. Take the good with the bad.

I really hate that handling fee crap. €15 for a €12 customs fee...

it was with DHL, the deliverer himself didnt know what the charge was for, then a woman from the company rang me and dazzled me with numbers and percentages over the phone when i asked so i just said OK!

i know its a small hit but as someone mentioned, its a decent % of the overall!

If had of come by the postal service, she would have sailed straight through free of charge. The big boys go by the rules. The silly feckers. :D

I had a chat with the customs branch of An Post recently when a package hadn't turned up. When I told the guy that it was worth about 70 Euro, his response was that they wouldn't have been interested in it.
