Just going through online check in for a BMI flight from Dublin - London tomorrow.

In the information section, there's a note saying online check-in is valid for London-Dublin, but then there's a footnote saying:
*Please note, all passengers printing their boarding cards at home and flying between the UK and the Republic of Ireland must present an acceptable form of photographic ID at security. When departing from Dublin, when you drop your bags at our online fast bag drop desks, your printed boarding pass will be exchanged for a boarding card which will enable you to proceed through security.

If you're not bringing bags, do you still need to exchange your printed boarding pass somewhere (which kind of defeats the purpose of checking in online) or can you just head straight through security with the pass you print yourself?

No - if you're travelling with hand baggage only just print off the boarding pass at home and head straight for security and the departure gate. There's a barcode on the boarding pass that the security personnel will scan as you pass through.

There is usually someone at the start of the security queue making sure you have the right paperwork anyway.
