Actually afaik Swords has been upgraded to up to 24mb http://www.btireland.ie/llu_exchanges.shtml.

Which means if your syncing at 12Mb, that's probably the max your line can handle.

Try inputting your attenuation & noise Margin on this page http://www2.farina1.com/adsl/ along with your sync speed & it will give u a rough guide of what your line can handle.

Your router may also be a bottleneck or they may have just not upped you to the full 24Mb.

I'm guessing these Stats aren't good...

I'm on BT's fatest package at the mo which was 3MB earlier this year then I was upgraded. I noticed that I started to get about double that around April and lately when I test it, it's around 7 but I would certainly love 24.

I was tempted to move to NTL for their 20 deal but I don't want to sign up to a 12 month contract but now that BT seem to have the fastest at the mo I'm happy to stay with them.

No, line attenuation of 54dB is terrible. With the more tolerant ADSL2+ you'll still only make 4 meg max.

If you were upgraded to 8mb(if on one of their adsl2+ exchanges)earlier in the year then you should have got 24mb by now. However if you're only getting 7mb then your line obviously isn't capable of any more than that. There was someone on this forum last week who was on a 24mb exchange but BT downgraded him back to the 3mb package as his phone line could only get to 4mb. It mainly depends on how far you are from the exchange.
I would recommend switching to NTL because phone ines aren't capable of anything more than 24mb on adsl2 (and you won't getting those speeds unless you live beside the exchange anyway) whereas cable is different. Cable is capable of far higher speeds and ntl will have the means to upgrade speeds further in the future. Also, most people on the 20mb package seem to be getting the max speeds. You also won't have to pay line rental like you do now.

You're lucky to be syncing at 3mb tbh. I have better attenuation and noise marginthan you but BT said I could only get 1mb (even though im on 2mb with eircom now:rolleyes:).

I'm not sure how to read into Line Attenuation noise etc, if someone could have a look at the reading from my modem and see what the max possible from the line should be.

33dB gives a best of about 13 megs, so your lines syncing at it's best already.

im syncing at 11mb/1mb up on the blanch exchange, afaik im pretty close to the exchange(anyone know where it is?)
I have 43DB line attenuation though but that is probably more so due to the really crap phone point wiring i've done >_> its like hanging out of the wall and the wire is 10m long.

Nice to see ireland finally getting real broadband

Thanks RC, I can't really commit to NTL's 12 month contract at this time as I might be moving within the next year but if I move to a new place, I'll look into getting NTL broadband.
