[REQUEST] External 2.5" enclosure recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good 2.5" external hdd enclosure that will run off of a single usb port.

My current enclosure uses a usb-y cable and won't run (on any machine) unless i've plugged in both connectors. My girlfriends WD passport however runs no problem on a single cable.

    Anyone got any recommendations?

My harddrive enclosure has the y cable but runs off one usb port just fine. Are you meant to plug it into two ports for extra power? That never even occurred to me. It's just a cheapo no name one I got off ebay.

TBH, its probably more to do with the drive rather than the enclosure.

The enclosure doesnt really 'do' anything in terms of power requirements. If you've tried your one on a bunch of machines, and all of them need 2XUSB to power it, i'd say its the drive itself.

Maybe get a newer HDD with better power consumption.

I agree the enclosure isnt the determinant of how much power the drive needs, which sounds like it needs in excess of 0.5A: the max draw on a USB 2.0 port. Regardless of the enclosure it wont change the power requirement.

I understand its frustrating having to occupy 2 ports (I only have 3 total) so for myself I went ahead and got a mini-Hub: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1717552&Sku=A225-7012&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=TBBTkwCjCVyBpAgf%20mwzygtCjCVRqCjCVRq (except I paid twice as much for it...grrr. Great hub though)

Plug that hub into slot A, plug the Power cable on the USB-Y into slot B and pug the data cable into the hub. On the Y cable, the extra-power/dummy plug is the one that hangs off like an extra dick.

cheers for that. I (like a dope) hadn't thought of the drive's power consumption.
