Runners Knee

Hi Folks. I Was wondering if anybody heard of "runners knee". I started running a few years back but gave up because I kept getting a soreness behind my right knee. I joined a gym instead. Sometimes I get this soreness after a hard session on the treadmill. Recently I stated to go for a run outside about once a week. About halfway though my run my knee stars to feel sore and it's sore afterwards for a while. I was looking up some sports websites and read about runners knee. It sounds like what I have.

I wonder has anybody else experienced this from running? Also could you recommend some specific stretches etc... I would really like to get this sorted as I love running.

    Cheers.

Foam roller is supposed to be good for stretching out the ITB, check out the Runners World site it has some stuff on stetches etc for runners knee.

    Or

    Physio

floyd333, stay away from a physio unless you are actually injured, they only want to get you in the door for repeated sessions and won't help you much on a once off basis.

You are most likely an overpronator like myself as I used to get this pain behind my left knee, it can be down the shoes you are wearing.

Also it's likely that one leg is stronger than the other, which is common.
This can lead to stress on the weaker leg during longer runs, as mp1972 said there are stretches you can do for each leg, with a focus put on the weaker one to build it up.

sounds to me like you need to get some proper gait analysis done, could be lots of things ITB, Patella Sublux., Medial, Chondro etc.

I'd recommend irishfit.ie. They give you a full report hard copy (really useful if your like me and forget everyting the physio has said 5 mins later) takes aout an hour or so and costs something like 80E, but really worth it!

I had this problem for years and would always have to give up running or doing any high impact exercise after 3 or 4 months. A physio recommended that I take a course of glucosamine with chondritin for 3 months before starting running. I also got a pair of kayanos as I overpronate and have to wear orthotics for walking.

Touch wood etc etc I've had no problems since and I'm currently training for the marathon. As an extra precaution I'm going to get my gait tested over the next couple of weeks and make sure I'm wearing the correct running shoes.

we do not give out medical advice. If you are injured and concerned about it, go to a professional with certificates on their wall and a brass name plate on the door! The best we can do for you here is regale you with tales of our own past injuries and what we did about them. To paraphrase the disclaimer on boxes of pills "REMEMBER this thread has been prescribed for you. DO NOT give it to anyone else as it may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours."

If you are having persistent problems you really need to go and see a professional rather than trying to get answers off the internet. I hope your knee recovers soon.
