Anyone know how you go about getting work as an extra ? It seems you have to pay 80 odd euro for a yearly membership, im not keen on this.

can't answer your question, but i'd be interested to know if places like moviesextras.ie (or something like that) actually work.

i thought it was illegal to have to pay to get work?

Spontaneously I'd say scam to anything demanding cash to offer a job :pac:

    Isn't that a membership cost?

It is also an effective way of excluding timewasters.

I signed up to movieextras when I was in college - like three years ago. I paid one membership fee and am still getting calls and texts.

So far this year I'd say I was offered maybe 50 - 60 days work as an extra.

I believe its a membership fee to join the union. Im just wondering if theres a way around it.

So you think its worth it then ?

The only way around it would be to know someone who has joined them already, and then tag along to the casting/shoot.

I dropped a friend off to a shoot once and was waiting around when I was asked to take part - which was nice!

Is it worth it? If you can be really flexible i.e. be available with a couple of days notice for a couple of days then it can be worth it yeah. Like I said, I paid once and got three years worth of service for it so I guess it ain't too bad (I am presuming that my number was never taken off the members list in error.)

The joining fee covers cost of getting your photo taken, admin fees etc. There's quite a few different agencies about for extra work, not just film but commericals, tv work. Assets and John Compton agencies have an extra section.

The amount of work you get can depend on your look. I know a 69 yr old man who gets a lot of extra work because of his age and his look. There's not going to be many older extras whereas there will be plenty of younger people. Also depends on how reliable and flexiable you are.

Its a very boring job so bring a book with you. But if you have an interest in film its a good way to see how its done.

Just to confirm, it doesn't cover the cost of having a photo taken. They allow you to put your pic up on their webiste. Separate events are held where you can get your photo professionally taken - at an extra cost.

For movieextras it doesn't but for other agencies it does. EDIT: Just been told Compton don't charge joining fee.

    Backstage is another agency.
