Im new to the whole college scene especially regarding TCD and dont really know how it works so...

1.when does the year start if your doing the science course?

2.What are the total course fees for the year?

3.Is there some kind of freshers week? When will it be?

Thanks for any answers im unsure of these because up until recently I was dead set on going to UCD but have changed my mind.

Myth will be along soon to give proper answers but in the interim:

    1) October 9th normally, with Freshers week the week before. You will be sent all info by Trinity though after the results are out.

    2) Courses are free, but there is a circa 900 registration fee. This is waived if you are a recipient of a grant though I think.

    3) See 1! Freshers week is great fun and well worth doing!

Freshers Week Kicks off on thr 29th of September. My last freshers' week :(
    Cannot wait.

Fresher's week runs from September 29th to October 3rd. As well as lots of fun society stuff and parties, you will also have to reguster during this week (usually assigned a 2 hour window where you have to queue up, get your student card etc.). You'll also have a sports hall tour, library tour, faculty meeting and maybe a course meeting scheduled during the week, but registration is by far the most important.

Lectures will start on Monday 6th October. It may be a case that the first day will just be introductory stuff and you probably won't cover too much actual course material.

Make sure you get to Fresher's Week, great craic and all the free johnnys your willy could support. Try not to cling to school buds, you're going to have to make college friends at some stage and everyone will be in the same boat!

You'll find out at the start of term what books you need. I would guesstimate that they will be around 70 a pop for the three subjects you do in science - though you may not necessarily have to buy them.

As soon as you find out what books you need, go to the library and take them out. Keep renewing them as needed.

Amazon is your friend. I get all my books from their for usually the cost of 1 or 2 new books bought here.

There is no section. You search by name.

    amazon.co.uk

Then search by name. Also look at the 'used and new' section.

Can't you only renew for 6 weeks at a time?

You could chance your arm and ask the Executive Officer of the course if the reading lists are available yet. A few of us did that this year and got them in the summer of '07.

I found Amazon Marketplace/used & new to be very good. You save a bundle and the books were in very good nick too.

That is true (or some time like that) and people can still block renewals.

Best to buy them, you will always have them then.

Completely disagree. You might not always need the books. Use the library, that's what it's there for.

I don't believe there's any need for first years to buy books, although in later years there may be (if you're going the academic/research/postgrad route).

What course are you hoping to do?

It'll be a while before you can work out what books you might want to buy. If you pick physics the book is bought for you (or at least they were last year.) I bough two maths books from abebooks.com and got great use out of them. Mind you they were like the third edition of books now on their ninth or tenth edition but there's no real difference apart from a couple of mixed up for chapters (and for a tenner each I wasn't going to complain.) I made the mistake of listening to Chemistry lectureres saying the books were essential and bough two at a cost of about €70 each. I think I read the contents once so don't make the same mistake. Can't comment on any of the other science subjects but it seems people in biology didn't find any great benefit from buying their books either.

In BESS, and I would imagine its the same for the sciences, there were only 20 copies of book for a 300 person class.

I had to buy most of my books as they weren't in the library in the run up to exams.

I actually found the UCD library useful in that instance last year. They had copies of all the books I was too slow to take out in the Lecky. Although I hope everyone doesn't start doing that.

I remember I couldn't get my hands on one book for love nor money and one of the term tests related entirely to it. So just as I was about to break down and cry I remembered to get someone in UCD to fetch it for me. Happy days! :)

In first and second year I found that I thought that I needed to have my own copy of the maths and stats and economics book. (as in the this is how the graphs work bit) But in reality I probably would have been fine with the library.

In third year I bought no books and was none the worse for it. Next year I wish I had the luxury of buying core course texts but there don't really exist for my courses.

It really depends on what you're like and how you like to work. Some people need to have their own copies of the books, but what i found a lot was that one of my group of friends would have bought one book and another of us would own a copy of another book and we'd pool them together if very stuck.

Good point - I like to have my own books as my study can be erratic and I also write notes beside key sections.

If you can afford them, it won't do any harm to have them!

That's why you should contact your subject librarian to give them your booklist, and they'll order in new books/move books from stacks to LEN/SLEN.

I remember doing the 'pooling books together' thing coming up to exams from books that we had taken out of the library. We even split the fines!

Instead of starting a new thread, I may as well just post here.

I was just curious about exams in Trinity. I'm starting Law in October and I'm just wondering how many exams I will have in 1st Year.

Also, I heard the Christmas Exams in TCD don't really count for anything, it's all about the End of Year Exams, is that true?

Might count for about 20% of a subject, but yes the summer exams are the main ones.

As far as I know Law don't have any Christmas exams. Essays in such courses usually count for 20-40% of the overall grade for the year.

Ah right I see, thanks! Does anyone know how many essays are given in 1st Year Law then?

Sorry about all the questions....I'm just interested.
