The MPEG4 conversion and CAM features are separate.

People would be stark raving bonkers to buy a CAM before Boxer launches offically.

For FTA, the CAM feature not needed, only MPEG4 conversion needed. Again I'd do nothing till the RTE service is official.

Boxer may supply CAMs with MPEG4 conversion for Digital TV users on Subscription.

I'd note too from my tests that a Conversion Module on some (Most? all?) sets is visually more artifacts, clearly less quality than MPGE4 direct setbox without converter. I've tested both with off air and my own MPEG4 DTT test signals.

hi Watty - can you post screenshots from your tests or give a better explanation of why stb is better than CAM?

But if you have no cable, and were relying on the MPEG2 encrypted signal for watching the 'Irish' channels for the last year and a half, is this not an option, (other than going back to watching on analogue through the snow)? Or can you buy the MPEG4 conversion piece separately?

    Yours, a non-techie

    It's not a CAM function.

It's a MPEG4 codec, driving an MPEG2 encoder in real time. Real time MPEG encoding needs SERIOUS 1K Euro+ gear to do it well in real time. Decoding is much easier.

A STB or a TV with MPEG4 built in only has to decode. A Converter will increase artifacts, especially on lower bitrate signals.

Possibly the STB /TV based MPEG4 decoders may be slightly better than older MPEG2 decoders in older TVs/STB or the MPEG4 decoder in the Neotion converter which happens to be optionally a CAM too.
