Not sure if you could call them all luxury cars but heres my list from 78. I think 1978 was the first year for most of them.....possibly not the CX!

    BMW M1
    Audi 100
    Porsche 928
    Citroen CX
    Opel Monza
    Reliant Scmitar GTE
    Aston Martin V8 Vantage

    Reliant Scmitar GTE
    Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Two cars of similair vintage and style yet one costs about 25k for a half-decent example and the other 4k.

    Mike.

What about a Fiat 130 coupé?

Do you have any intention of actually buying a luxury classic? :pac:

    Meeow!
The guy is just asking for examples, lets be friendly! I didn't have a classic for a number of years, but still was interested in getting one. 3 cars down, I have obviously caught the bug. IMO it's better to share our interest in classics rather than to questions someones intensions. If he buys a car or not it is immaterial to the forum.

I'm a big fan of Scimitars, but similar to an Aston Martin Vantage!?

Unless you can prove that the car was registered elswhere outside of the UK before the 1st date of registration in the UK, I'm afraid the revenue is going to charge you for an 81 car.

VRO uses Date of 1st Registration and NOT date of manufacture as the benchmark for assessing the VRT. If there are good number of years between Manufacture date and date of 1st registration in UK (or other country), than the VRO will accept Date of Manufacture as a guideline for declaring VRT Exemption, however, in this case, where there is only 2 to 3 years between date of manufacture and date of 1st registration, you will have to come up with better "ammo" to convince the guys and girls in the VRO offices...

Personally (being a sensible sort of guy;)) I would go for a 'sensible' (i.e. easy to service, get parts for, etc) luxury car .......

Two that come to mind are ...

Mercedes W123 series, and Opel Monza or Opel Senator (i.e. 4 door saloon version of Monza) ...(i.e. something a bit different) ..saw this mint Monza for sale online in Wales recently.....;) (N.B. I know it's an '81 model, but 78/79 models are identical)...

I think a "luxury" car is one with at least 4 doors and probably one not normally driven by the owner:

There can only be one Aston in this category: The Lagonda. aston-martin-lagonda-front-1_126.jpg

Rarer than hen's teeth, but how about the first BMW 5 series (codename e12)? A chap I know has just bought a gorgeous red Alpina version.

Almost bought one myself, but couldn't bring myself to part with my 2002 tii.

Service/parts/reliability/cost/stand out/grin appeal without doubt one has to add the BMW 6 series, have had one since '03, passes NCT's parts no problem as so many aftermarket Co's are doing OEM parts & a plentiful supply of BMW mechanics that have gone solo & in fairness these engines (M30) are basically bulletproof, compared to current models these are without much computer technology so any mechanic worth his salt can look after. There is such a vast wealth of knowledge/information out there on the net you will master any job yourself anyhow. Broke the golden rule & bought mine on a whim without getting looked over & am still smiling.

    Happy hunting..

Well, they're both tempermental heaps at times. :) Anyone who paid 4K for a Scim that wasn't long after a total rebuild was stiffed.

    Dave (Scimitar owner)
