Could anyone recommend a decent, reasonably priced blu-ray/hd-dvd combo drive (internal or external)?

    Thanks

I have this LG GGC-H20L, Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Reader which does the job just fine. I got it from a UK ebay shop which worked out a little cheaper but I was nearly 3 weeks waiting for delivery. :(

One problem was that it shipped with Power DVD 7 software rather than the latest Power DVD 8 ultra and 7 wouldn't play the latest version Blu ray discs. It would be worth checking with LG if it now ships with Power DVD 8 Ultra as it is expensive to upgrade...

problem with some of the latest versions of the software is that they've dropped the HDDVD support. Just check it to make sure

Yep AFAIK only Power DVD 8 Ultra supports HD DVD. I'm now using Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre which has Bluray and HD-DVD support.

I got one of those LG's myself last week , PowerDVD 7 does play HD-DVD's but you need the Hi-Def patch , which you download from Cyberlink , you are prompted to do it as part of the install of the software on the disk supplied.

It throws up a screen saying if you dont download the patch then you wont be able to play some HD content , which is all fair enough , and of course you must register to get the patch.

I guess this makes it equivalent to PowerDVD 8 in terms of Hi Def playback.

The problem I had Mathias was that PowerDVD 7 did not play the latest version of Blu-ray discs even with the patch installed! HD-DVDs played fine...
