Just curious to see what people loved/hated most about DCU? Just in general like, atmosphere, facilities, people, academic life etc

Graduated in 2002, and looking back we had a great bunch of students in the class. My lecturer and lab assistant were sound and a great help for my final year project as well. Also turned out to be closer to home than my secondary school. Intra was also a brilliant help, come CV time and winning the fireman pneumatics project (ME) that we had to do in teams of 3. :)

Worst part was trying to get my head around Prof McCorkells complicated electrical theory and Jenny Brutons 4th year control systems stuff. Never again! Also in 1st year, Jim Dowlings 3 hours labs were pretty exhausting.

    Best:
    Great Lecturers (mostly)
    Good computing facilities
    Great course
    Good library

    Worst:
Sh1te nightlife (compared to my previous haunt, NUI Maynooth)
    Filthy toilets (all of them)
    Lack of choice for food/lunch
    Location
Have to pay extra for gym (Even though it is a far better gym)

    - So academically very good, but not the most exciting place in the world.

Best: Facilities (computers etc are good, no limits like in other colleges). Nice campus. Good lecturers in my experiece. Great clubs and socs if you get involved.

Worst: bit expensive, corporate attitude sometimes.

But as with all things, its what you make of the college and your college experience that makes the difference.

Best: Good gym, computer facilities, library, compact campus.

Worst: Disgusting toilets, greedy attitude of admin people, no nightlife (compared to NUIM) and the campus residences people are ***** of the highest order :)

I don't agree with the campus res in DCU being that bad - College Park res are amazing but Larkfield and the one next to it are a bit minging!

I think he/she's talkin about security and campus management in general. I lived there in 2003 and it was ****ing great. Neighbours were legends and the parties were mental. The following year the fences went up and the place turned into a ****in prison.

Best things in DCU- computers, ward facilities for the student nurses in the School of Nursing, great lecturers that stick up for students at Programme Board meetings, clubs and societies

Worst things- having to swipe in for attendance in lectures, missing RAG week for my 4 years of college, cost of stuff on campus (registry office, food etc) and also having to for out an extra 200quid if you want to join the gym (how come they cant do a TCD on it??)

200 quid for the gym is pretty good. However when one is not treated as a paying customer it is rather irksome. The service attitude can be dire.

    Grad in 2002

Best way to describe it was a 'Degree Factory'

No life what so ever in college.

A bit of Craic, a lot of work is the best way i can describe it.

    Hated:

Spar and the canteen but went to either one or the other most days.

1 euro coffees from the machines but had to drink them.

The automatic windows in the library and the mysterious grinding noise
    in the engineering building.

    Loved:

MUD - almost failed first year because of it, if it didn't get so empty,
i most definitely would have failed second year.

First Year on old Res - Both the best and worst year of college.

Most people there were pretty friendly and decent.
Lecturers were almost all dead on.
    Relatively good facilities.

But on the flip side there's almost no social side to the University (mentioned several times already).

The Registry staff are utterly incompetent... failing people accidentally, losing documentation pertaining to students registration and deferred exams... on one occasion I was in the queue when the girl at the counter revealed to a guy that they had given his grant to somebody else by accident! They're completely disinterested and refuse to take responsibility when they screw up.

Pretty unimpressed with the events over the last few years. Ok, you've got an ironic love for trashy, camp, 90s bands, we get it. Stop inflicting it on everybody else. Four years there and I don't think I saw a single decent act. It would have been nice if the events people had been a little less self-centred about their choice of music for the events.

    Location ain't great either.

And they closed the Old Bar, which was the only one worth going to. The other one is a death-trap.

Impossible to get a computer in the library (although that's not specific to DCU, I suppose).

Peep holes in EVERY toilet in the Henry Grattan building! Wtf like? It's ridiculous.

edit: I actually enjoyed my time there for the most part, despite the above.
