I go through phases where I just cant bear to watch something american or english movie , and am currently in that kind of mood. I used to keep up with
new releases but havent for the last 18 months or so

Tartans www used to be a good place to to start for new stuff, but that seems down and the us site is horribly out of date.

I have gone back into my own stuff and nwatched some of my favorites again stuff like tale of two sisters, the oldboy trilogy, many other korean / J horror movies. a bunch of french and german stuff and even some american stuff like primer and pi which i actually enjoyed more the second time around.

So please feel free to offer suggestions based on the above or stuff you have liked thats fairly recent.

I have trope de elite and city of men to keep me going this week in case someone suggests those :)

Check out a bittersweet life if you haven't already, it's a nice twisted tale of vengeance that only the Koreans seem capable of making... Not quite on the same level as Oldboy, but still well worth checking out.

Paprika is worth a look if you fancy an animated film

Not sure if you'd call it mainstream, but I really like "The Foluntain" by Darren Aranofsky. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz star as two star-crossed lovers across different times. It's romantic without being too mushy and if you like sci-fi/existentialism, this is chock-full of them.

(I just love Rachel Weisz anyway:))

    4 Months, 3 weeks, 2 days
    A Very Long Engagement
    Amélie
    Naked
    Heaven
    The Barbarian Invasions
    Three Colours
    Run Lola Run
    Das Experiment
    Nightwatch (original Danish version)
    Gypo
    Breaking the Waves
    Mysterious Skin
    Pieces of April
    Vera Drake

And yes it's American and has mainstream actors but is not mainstream:
Magnolia (one of my favourites of all time).
