Has Apple made any statement regarding the trouble with the Nvidia G86 graphics cards? As I read it, all of these graphics cards are defective... I will be calling Apple tomorrow find out what my options are.

From what I've seen in the rumor mill I'd tend to believe that a lot of what Nvidia has produced in the last two years may be subject to failures. Initially they quietly confirmed a problem with specific batches shipped to one manufacturer (HP I think) and said that no one else has been affected. The weak excuse they gave and the growing list of exceptions that appear to be slowly appearing is adding strength to the suggestion.

Nvidia are suspiciously silent throught this debacle. By the looks of it either they're gratuitously mis-managing a medium sized problem or they're trying to hide a problem that could wipe them out. My money is tending towards the latter the longer this goes on...

I have a 24 inch iMac with an 8800. Am I also on on the meltdown list?

I don't think so. The 8800 is the G80 chip which I've heard nothing about in these rumors. The problems seem to be with the G86 chip which is used in the 83xx, 84xx, and 85xx series cards I believe. What's the 8600M GT in current MacBook Pros based on though? The desktop 8600 GT is a G84 chip but I'm not sure about the notebook part.

From what I've read, only MacBook Pros are likely to be affected from Apple's current line-up but Apple has made no comment whatsoever on the matter. Only DELL and HP have recognized the issue and have issued BIOS updates for the cards to the users affected (these updates simply crank up the fans sooner and longer really, more of a stop-gap measure than a solution) - if this issue does affect MBPs, I would sure hope that Apple deals with it like Microsoft deals with the RROD issue for the Xbox360 (3 year warranty for the specific issue).

Bit under the weather at the moment but I called Apple today anyway on 1850 946 191.

The rep I spoke to, Dessie, indicated that there is no known problem with the graphics card used in the MBP, that's not to say that there is no issue but that it has not yet been flagged by Apple.

So on the Apple end there has been no info on the subject posted to their tech support, nothing red flagged by Apple and no statement made by Apple in regards to Nvidia.

To be perfectly honest the (cagey) phone call has not put me at ease, the rep simply did not have any information or knowledge of any issue...had she said she was aware of the subject but there was nothing to worry about then it might be a different story....the fact that she hung up on me after I asked if I could get her rep number obviously makes me very sceptical of there not being a problem.

I will say that if you do not have an Applecare extended warranty that you buy one before your 12mth warranty runs out...if it's already too late then I hope Apple extend the standard warranty to cover any graphics card related breakdowns after the intial 12mths have passed.

    I'm worried.

Perhaps the cooling is better in Apples machines. Or maybe they are waiting for the first class action which is usually what Apple do.

    See under Q9: http://www.consumerconnect.ie/eng/Learning_Zone/FAQs/Faulty_goods/

Assuming that the 'reasonable lifetime' of a MBP is longer than 1 year and the issue (if any) is due to a faulty component, there's scope to claim outside of the warranty under consumer law - should it come to that.

Cheers :D bookmarked... I'm going to let this play out and see what happens... I'd occasional get heavy use out of the MBP with editing and such...if anything goes pearshaped i'll post here...hopefully others do too...

I'm after registering just because of this thread. I must say I'm a little worried, I have actually noticed that occasionally my graphics card on my MBP will throw up BIG glitches , at first I just thought it was my windows partition but then I began to game more on the mac partition and found the same type of problem so I did what any user would do and look for driver updates and game updates, but none of it seems to have fixed the problem, so I'm going to invest in apple care this afternoon. But its just a warning.... things do look iffy for the MBP's

Apple has now confirmed the fault is present in MacBook Pros and will repair them for up to two years from the original purchase date (which still sucks, I think it should be three or lifetime really...):

Good, two years is crap I agree. I wonder how they repair the fault? do they just stick a new card in an hope that it isn't faulty too?
