I've just graduated and im earning a measly 1,440 per month before tax (on tax credits atm)

    My rent is 600 monthly

Travel expenses to work 100 pm
    that leaves me with 740euro

A person on the dole earns receives 198e per week. that's 792e per month. They get around 70e pw for their rent so alls good. Not to mention they get a medical card, cuts on their gas and esb bills etc

So i'm pissed to learn that after achieving good grades in my degree that some people have been sitting on their asses while i break my back each day to come out with less than them.

That'll be all, i'm of to have beans on toast for dinner :(

The job i have is irrelevant as i earn above the minimum wage. I actually enjoy my work but they pay is **** tbh. In any case, they only want me for the summer so i'm looking for other work at the moment for the end of september.

Can you find somewhere less expensive to live? €600 sounds like an awful lot especially if you're not earning much.

That's €25 per week in travel expenses. Assuming that's public transport, is there any way to cut that down? Get a monthly ticket or something?

Unfortunately, life isn't fair. On another note, is your starting salary linked to improvements after six months or anything? Remember that if you stick out the crap job with crap pay for a year, you'll have a year's worth of experience with which you can hunt down a better job. The person stuck on the dole will still be stuck on the dole.

Hi thanks for the replies. My rent is too high but that's dublin for you. i'm looking into moving atm. The 100Euro is for a monthly combined luas and rail and that's for a studen ticket . Yeah i have 6 months office experience now so hope i can find something close to home and with better wages come september.

are you actually envying people on the dole???

aw, your rent is 600 a month? i can't afford to move out of my parents at all, so no sympathy here. and 600 a month on rent isnt the worst from what ive seen.

i take exception to people thinking everyone on the dole is sitting on their asses. it's not the sweet life you think. did you know we're heading for a recession? jobs are going left and right. did you know over-qualified people are being turned down for jobs cleaning because they aren't experienced (in mopping floors)? If youre going to be bitter, so am i :P

if you just graduated and are starting a job (you didnt say what youre doing) straight out of school, you're obviously going to start on the bottom rung of the salary ladder. if youre good, youll move up, and youll make a decent wage soon enough. lucky you.

id really like if people stopped lumping Everyone on the dole into the scumbag waster category.

This is your first job out of college. Everyone starts on poorish money when they leave college. The good news is your salary will increase every year. Eventually you'll earn good money.

People on the dole (who remain on the dole) will always be on crap money.

It'll work out ok, don't worry!

    :(

Why does your net monthly figure already have expenses removed but the person on the dole doesnt? Your net income is gross minus tax, just like everyone else. Not gross minius rent, travel, food and whatever else you want to take off to make your point seem more valid.

If you were on the dole you'd still have your €600 rent and 100 travel. Only thing is it would be coming out of €876 not €1440.

If your wondering where I got €876 btw, it's because your maths is wrong. your monthly income is not your weekly income x 4. months are different lengths (in weeks) The dole is €198.50. Multiply that by 53 (52 weeks in a year plus theres a double week at christmas) which is €10520.50. Divide that by 12 to get the monthly figure (€876.71)

i'm not saying everyone on the dole is a waster. In my original message i said "some people" i.e those who can't be bothered looking for work and not being made to do at least a few hours community work to motivate them. I know i'm starting at the bottom so i will look forward to gaining experience and moving up. I would never want to go on the dole out of self respect but i don't like how i earn less to live off tha many people on benefits. it just shows the systems is a shambles.

Thanks you for showing me that they actually get more than i realised. I removed the rent because people on the dole get rent allowance and probably only pay a tiny proportion of tjheir rent. i removed travel expenses because i need to get to work to earn money. I doubt someone on the dole pays 100euro for travelling to interviews.

Yeah but people on the dole get rent allowance don't they? Plus I know that a substantial amount of people on the jobseekers' benefit also have other incomes. Not all, not even most, but some---a large fraction. I know because I've dealt with many in my current job who have no qualms in claiming from the government.

The majority are well-meaning. Another portion---again, substantial---see no point in reacquiring jobs. They've been on the dole so long that their CV is more like a black hole and their self-motivation is near-zero.

I see no sense in state benefits that seem to keep people so comfortable that thbey see no need to rejoin the workforce. I've claimed benefits due to illness but these required constant updates from my doctor. I was out of work not by choice but by physically beinjg unable to do my job.

Jobseekers are not given info on how to get jobs. They're not given back to work courses or counseling or advice...NOTHING. I don't blame the claimants for falling into this trap. The money is just about enough to survive on. But they deserve better treatment, motviation, support and guidance. They need to be shown the honour of contributing to their own society. And the millions of euro being pumped into this system could then be diverted towards raising standards of education in challenged schools.

Sorry if this is a little off topic. I just feel that our government, rather than avoiding wounding our future generations, would rather band-aid the problem by throwing benefits at it.

OP I feel your pain cos although I avoided 3rd level education (something I now regret) I've worked hard to get qualifiactions and seen nothing for it. Pure grit, self-belief and imagination are what's needed to get ahead, man. Go for what you want to do in life and forget the easy cushion of state benefits. You'll be richer, more fulfilled, and proud.

Expenses wise, see if new accommodation is possible. Can you move in with your folks awhile and save for a deposit (houses will be cheap soon don't worry!)

Not everyone rents btw. What about all the people with mortgages far higher than your rent that find themselves on the dole?

When I was on the dole, I would only have qualified for rent allowance if I was renting a one bedroom apartment (that's for the wife aswell) and only if it cost below 90e a week, anything over that and I would get nothing...and even then, the allowance is not a lot.

The rental allowance differs depending on what county you are in but its not what you make it out to be.

This has nothing to to do with this forum, take your pain to After Hours or Thunderdome.

I'm also off to have some beans and then to decide if i'm going to hand out bannings or just infractions

edit: just infractions, they were nice beans
