    Hi,
I just filled out this form and when finished it said gross relief due is 2000.

My rent is a total of 4400 for the year. What does this 2000 mean?

    Thanks.

Gross relief due is 2000 but you get that at the lower tax rate - i.e. 20% of 2000 = 400. This 400 will be reimbursed as tax credits if the rent relief is for this year.

Ok. So I do I get that 400 back in one month then through my wages is it?

I had no idea about this. Where do i fill it out? What happens if you are sharing and one person pays it all by direct debit. it must be fairly complicated. How do i proove that i pay 600 per month because i just hand it to my flatmate and he pays the whole sum.

    Thanks for any help

Is it for '07 or '08? When I filed for previous years, I got a cheque in the post. If it's for this year, I'm not sure when you'd get the credits and whether they'd be allocated for one month or re-adjusted to spread over the year.

i presume it is added your tax credits so you will be free from paying tax for that amount. not sure though.

Maybe you should start a new thread rather than hijacking mine.

 Excuse me. I thought this was an open topic for discussion and it is not like i was dragging the thread off-topic like you have done. in fact, i did reply to your query of how you will get the money.

Excuse me. I asked a specific question on something.

Where did my post invite discussion on what they think might be the way you get your money back from the revenue.

And fyi, i think it's ok to ask a question in a thread that has a similar question. You have filled out the form and could have given me the link or how you went about applying. It's not a lot to ask for, is it?
    :pac:

Search for rent relief on citizensinformation.ie and you'll find the form and details on how to claim it. You need a receipt for your rent though..something I found out this week when I filled out the form myself.

A little less of your attitude please or you will be looking at a temporary ban from this forum.

Jaffa was just asking where you get form needed to claim the rent relief. She was not hijacking your thread because your original question was already answered.

thanks etho. i thought the receipts would be needed. That's a problem for me because it's my flatmate's name on it so suppose i need to contact landlord.:( So much hassle but i'll look into it.

Same here, I pay the rent on our house but my housemates transfer their share to my bank account. Still waiting on our letting agent/management company to provide us with a receipt for the past year :(

It's worth looking into it, get the extra credits you are entitled to.

If it's for a previous year you are claiming, you will get the tax you overpaid refunded to you via cheque (as I discovered when I claimed for rent tax credits for a few years back :))

If you apply online you don't need to provide receipts - the Revenue Commissioners will generally chase it up with the landlord.

i applied for rent relief back in january for last year. Very simple process, all on line. just had to say how much rent i paid last year and give my landlord's pps number. got 400 paid directly into my bank account within a week or two. don't need receipts or anything but i'd say they do spot checks every once in a while.

Do you get more money every week for this current year or do you have to wait until the end of the year again?

i'm not sure. i'd say if you applied for it now they'd adjust your tax credits so that you'd be paying slightly less tax each week. i just like waiting until the end of the year so you get a lump sum back!

Your flatmate is probably claiming the lot :p Get a receipt from now on.

Jaffa - you don't need the receipts if you claim online. Just your landlords PPS number is enough.

Any money due for the current tax year is refunded by means of tax credits, ie you don't get any cash you pay less tax instead.

Any money due for previous years is paid by cheque or straight into your bank account.

Edited to say - you only need to apply once also. If you are still living in the residence it gets automatically applied to your tax credits for the following year up until such time as you inform revenue you have moved out.
