Most of these cars (the ones the rust didn't get first) were "General"-ised in the late 70's/80's. Big rear wheels, jacked up at the back, big exhaust and subsequently driven to destruction.

They definitely do resemble a Dodge Charger. All what you'd need to do would be to put a 440 cubic inch Hemi V8 into it, and you'd be set! :D

    Dunno what to do?

That's probably the only one around in this country. And it could be yours. Probably for next to nothing. I have no idea at all what the car would go for. A couple of grand maybe?

If you're into your Opels, surely you must have this one!

    Now ye're talkin! :D

As much as I like standard original I adore the 440 Hemi :)

I am sure there was probably very few of these sold back in the late 60's, early 70's but I would imagine some would have to have survived in some form or another.

.............yes I would say they are rare indeed. I would love to know the history of the one you are looking at as I used to travel to school in our neighbours one in the early 70's, coloured exactly as the one shown here !!

As far as I recall it was automatic and was later resprayed brown !

    We need a drool smiley!

That car is soo beautiful, unlike todays Opels.

My only concern would be where to get parts for such a rare car.

Shouldn't be THAT difficult. The body is the same as the Opel Rekord C coupe except for some trim bits and the vinyl roof and that 2.5 or 2.8 six cylinder was used in quite a few models. Both the Rekord and the Commodore have quite a big following so I'd say in the days of the internet parts should be obtainable.

Very true. Germany and the Netherlands are two good places to find parts for these cars.

I dont think there was a production 440 hemi, the largest hemi was a 426, the 440 had standard heads but came with a six pack carb, sorry for being so pedantic:o

I saw one of those at one of the shows last year. Think it was at Terenure. Looked great.

Here's mine, ironically with a Dodge Charger in the same shot!

its a lovely looking car, id say she struggles to break 70 though, you have to import a v8 plus new brakes and tyres to0 handle it.... just to do what opel never could... Make a Good car.

..........bit of a sweeping statement there. I agree that the later/most front wheel drive cars were wooden but the larger rear wheel drive cars, Senator,Omega,Rekord,Manta and Ascona were all very neat handling cars, and also had good rife refinement.

The old double wishbone front end on the Ascona/Manta was a nice piece of adjustable kit !

I think you're one for the ignore list, although i do like to laugh at your posts so you'll stay off it for a while longer

Why does it always have to be about power and handling?Sometimes just smoking around in a car as unusual as the commodore is good enough.Yes a V8 would be nice but it would take from the originality of it all.I would prefer a car as rare as that to be kept as original as it can be kept.

And opel made plenty of good cars, their designs were often way ahead of the eqivilant ford of the time.Take the suspension off the RWD kadett and compare it to the MK2 escort, light years ahead. The kadett has(as has been mentioned )a nice compact double wishbone front, and rear trailing arms and the mk2 just has leaf/cart springs and mcpherson strut front, hardly cutting edge at the time.Yes the ford sold more probably, and there is the whole rally thing...but it was definatly not the best design.
