Trying to find out if a laptop drive is dead.

All of a sudden the laptop wnt boot and comes up with something like could not detect hard drive press ctrl alt dlt to restart.

Cant go to recovery console to check if drive is working cause I dont have an xp cd so i took out the drive and put it in an integral 2.5 hdd case and connected it to my pc by usb. The light comes on for power but then kind of dims and lights up constantly while the har drive makes a double clicking sound all the time.

I was going to plug in the usb to 5v cable to see if it needed more power but of course there wasnt one in the box (supposed to be included).

Any idea whether its lack of power or does it sound like the drive is dead.

Their should be enough power from the ext usb to run the hd they some times come with 2 usb plugs for a extra bit of power. If you getting clicking sounds like the hd is dead (click of death). Best thing to do is have a look on the manufacturers of the hd site, most offer a 3 year warranty get a rma for the drive and they ship a new one best of luck :-) al
