    Hi
My nextdoor neighbour has got a dialup internet and the problem is that she cannot connect to the internet. When you go to dial-up it says "unable to estables connection".She has the internet lead comming from the computer in the living room (Dell) and runing out to the hallway room. The lent of the cable is about 10 foot. The cable looks it telephone wire not interenet wire....What can the problem be...

She also wants to get broadband but she cannot get it through the telephone line???? How else can she get broadband???she lives 3-4 miles away from the town up on a hill???

    Any help would be greatful

if she's on dial up then she would use a standard phone cable not Cat5 network patch cable.

maybe connect a phone to the end of the 10 foot cable to make sure that she's getting dial tone.

you can also maybe try a phone dialer from the PC, not sure what OS she's using probably XP. not sure if dialer comes with it but if it does then have the PC dial a mobile phone or something to make sure the modem works.

why can't she get it through a phone line? has she checked with the local ISPs? there are some wireless options available.

check getbroadband.ie you can search by area to see what providers are available in your area and if they are wired or wireless

Has she got an internet provider? and they will/should have a support line

That message usually means there's no dial tone or the connection is not set up correctly. Try these in the following order:
    1. Is the cable connected to the correct connector? Check at the rear of the PC.
    2. Is the socket, cable and connection live? Can a phone call be made from the line? Use a phone to check the wall socket for a dial tone. Then plug the connector at the end of the cable into the phone to check for a dial tone.
    3. Is the internet connection set up correctly? Using the Windows XP Internet Connection Wizard set up a new connection using known settings or using the user name and password already supplied by the internet provider. They're also available from eircom, UTV internet, etc... (or search the networking forum on Boards) On the last page of the wizard tick the box, "Make this the default connection." and the box "Turn on the windows firewall." Do not use the CDs supplied by any internet provider.
After completing these steps you should have a working internet connection. If not you may have a hardware or more serious software problem (ie. faulty modem, or missing/corrupted system file) So then it's time to phone support line of your internet provider. You may need to replace the modem and repair or re-install your operating system.
