What do people think are the hilliest courses in this country. I read in this forum that Bellewstown is very hilly I have never played it though. I'd nominate
    Esker Hills
    Castlecomer

As two very hilly courses. Both are excellent courses too IMO.

stackstown is probably hilliest one that I have played

Theres is only 1 winner for this. Frankfield in Cork. Its built on the side of a slope. None of the course is flat.
Once i put down my bag and it rolled away.:D

    I can beat them:

    McCreddin
    Glenmalure

Hilly kips although I think McCreddin is a savage track

Bellewstown is the only place I've ever felt the need for a Buggy !!

Glenmalure is hilly and shockingly bad.

Some courses are hilly and others are flat with one or two big hills.

In the North I'd suggest Scrabo or maybe Cairndhu but I'm sure there are worse.

With people calling courses kips - are you saying they are kips because they're hilly or are they hilly courses that happen to be kips? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,925 ✭✭✭BUACHAILL

    Kip as in Rubbish
I know I generalised on my comment about Glenmalure and McCreddin. Glenmalure is a kip. I love McCreddin its a very good test of golf but the hilliest course I have played and I have played a lot. especially in Wicklow. Roundwood is another one thats very hilly.

Glenmalure is very hilly and like others have said it's a kip. Castlecomer is very hilly too. I remember when I played there last summer I remember driving into the car park and noticing how many caddy cars there was around the place, there was loads. It's was only when I was out on the coarse the penny dropped as I was reaching for the Oxygen bottle. :D

Agree with Frankfield and you also include Fermoy.

+1 on Esker Hills - It does exactly what it says on the tin

I'm a member in bellewstown and after 9 holes this evening, I was wrecked. Playing a comp tomo and I'm taking out a buggie, otherwise I'm shattered by the 16 and lose loads of shots on the last 3. I've never seen another course that rents as many buggies or even has as many available to rent than Bellewstown.

I hear howth is very hilly too and final 3 at Deer park can take their tole too.

fermoy is all sloping fairways! can't handle it at all:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 393 ✭✭BillyBoy

I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist anymore but Kilternan was one of the hilliest (and worst!!). You played one of your tee shots from more or less on top of the ski slope! Need I say more!!

Gotta agree with f22 as well about Delganey. Hate the course (bad inter-club match play memories!) but as a smoker the course is a nightmare because it seems for half of it you are climbing up the side of a mountain. Nearly needed an oxygen mask around the turn there!!

Slade valley can be a weapon of a course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 353 ✭✭DubCul

I have played many courses in Ireland and Howth is very tough on the legs.

The 5th is nicknamed Coronary Hill

The view of Dublin Bay is breathtaking and view of Dublin city, at night, is second to none.

Surprised nobody already said it..Clonmel in Tipp

Esker Hills and Castlecomer for me.
Hilly but lovely courses with nice greens and some memorable holes.
    Great challenge!

The ones that come to mind for me are Slade Valley, Stackstown and Baltinglass. The old Kilternan was probably the worst dump I have ever played.
Esker is hilly but you just dont venture out there without a buggy. In terms of the the most uphill hole it has to be the first in Baltinglass. A joke.

remember playing a course when i was a young fella. all time hilliest of all time. Well one hill, up it and then down it.

    HazelGrove on the Blessington Road.

Other top tough walks, Stackstown, Ballinascorney and deffo Kilternan. Slade Valley too.

And this is the winner! Worst course ever, some ridiculous hills and holes!

Also up there is Esker Hills and Stackstown and the new Bray Course. Haven't actually played Slade Valley, but I've heard bad things!

Gort golf course in Galway. Terrible course and hills everywhere.

Frankfield for me, you nearly need to set up a base camp before you can start your round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭neckedit

The old Castleblaney course in Monaghan, Basically used to play around the side of a hill.

Esker Hills. Great Track, tough walk but that's the challenge.

    Buggies are for wimps. :)

Leinster Hills near carlow lives up to its name

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 384 ✭✭badbrian

Of the courses mentioned Esker Hills was tough. Lots of walking between holes as I remember as well. Slade Valley is hilly but only par 69. Stackstown is brutal for me, have played maybe 3 times. Always wrecked after it and didn't enjoy it.

    Muskerry and macroom....

Macroom aint really hilly at all!! 2, 3 and 5 the rest are all grand!

Baltinglass! The first 9 holes work their way up the side of a very steep hill so by the time you've got to the 10th your wrecked!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

    +1 for Frankfield
    ....and also Muskerry
....but Fermoy isn't hilly, it just has these gently rolling mounds.....everywhere ! :)

Muskerry only has 2 hills doesn't it?!

Baltinglass's front 9 can be a struggle. A bit of a sit down is normally required after playing the 1st.

I'd be afraid of the buggie over-turning at Esker Hills  Great course though. I love it.

The hilliest course in Ireland though has to be Carne (Bellmullet GC). There is cliffs everywhere and you're ball can end up 30 feet or more above the ground!!!

    Enniscrone too is quite hilly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭Benny Cake

Castlecomer is unbelieveably hilly; you need a defibrillator in you trolley, particularly after the walk from the 10th to the 11th:D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,536 ✭✭✭Dolph Starbeam

Esker hills would be the hilliest i've played.

just after playing bellewstown be the lamb of god I'm creams crackered should have know when I seen so many buggies available for rent

It's a toughy course alright but if you can play well there, other courses feel easy in comparison (at least on the legs and arms). You should try bellewstown twice a week and you'll know all about it or even carrying your clubs.

Actually, nice weather out there... might go for a round this afternoon.

Esker Hills and Castlecomer are the worst. Dunmurray Springs fairly bad as well.
