It might work. Pings can vary from around 150ms up to 1s with 3G broadband. At around 150ms, it would be doable, but at 1s there would be a sever lag in your conversation.

If VOIP is a must have, then 3G Internet is not for you.

It'll appear to work at first and then drop out just enough to annoy youand whoever you're talking to. I wouldn't recommend it unless as mukki says it's all that's available to you.

Often the upload speed is not good enough and the jitter & packet loss too high. Not just a latency issue.

Vodaphone disabled VOIP on some Nokia phones they sold, not just as a voice call revenue protection, but it is true what they said that it can be a poor customer experience.

Except that if it's the only thing available in your area, then it's likely to have a high subscriber base, and be even worse.

If 3G is the only thing available, then you simply can't get broadband. As a general rule, I'd never advise 3G for VOIP or gaming. It's for mobile use, and should be used in addition to a good fixed wireless, or wired, home service. Of course, not everyone (in Ireland) has that option.
