WOW really?! I forgot about it being announced 2 and a half weeks ago!

But seriously, this game will be ****e. Probably will have the old top-down view of the really old games and will be censored to bits

I'm expecting a top down view, ols school in content and there version of GTA. Having said that R* always push themselves so there will be something interetsting going on there.

Just please don't make it 3D.... the DS is a great little machine, but I don't think it does 3D games very well (yes that includes Mario 64DS and Metroid Prime Hunters)

Couldn't agree more. The 3d elements of New Super Mario Bros and Phantom Hourglass are as far as it should go.

I do think they'll make an attempt at some form of 3D. Personally I think thats a good thing but then again I dont actually own a DS

Well if you did own a DS and had played as many dire 3D based games on it as I have, you wouldn't be saying that ;)

It's annoying as most people expect games to be 3d nowadays. This console just wasn't built for it.

Seriously, the majority of them are that bad. If you want portible 3D stick to a psp.

I'm guessing the problem is the imput and not the power as I've heard the Ds compared to the N64 in terms of power.

I thought Mario 64DS was fine, not alwyas totally smooth but grand.

I'd agree though that by and large its not a 3D machine.

I for one would love it to be like the top down versions of old.

Also there's nothing wrong with 3D imo.

There is when you try and make Call of Duty 4 for the DS!

Developers need to know what is within a machines limit and not to overdo it. I generally find that's what is going wrong with 3D DS titles. Some of the more basic looking ones, especially the N64 ports and things like Starfox Command (Which looks very similar to the n64 version) work better.

The problem is, people don't want n64 type games. They wan't Call of Duty 4. Which just doesn't work.

Hopefully that doesn't happen with this game. At most I'd like to see a top down version with 3d elements.

Its just a bad idea all round. The GBA versions of GTA hardly set the world on fire and especially after seeing the next gen loveliness of GTA 4 this just seems a horrible retrograde step to make the DS "cool" to core gamers.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,403 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

oopsy, I meant to hit 2 instead of 3.

The DS is already cool , the games make it so.

    What's a core gamer ?

Someone who has a PSP ?

I think going back to the 2D style should be fairly interesting, haven't played the newer one, but GTA 3 and its two clones (oh wait, 'sequels') are fairly got fairly repetitive for me

Sounds good as long as it's like the original pc game.

Anybody remember the gbc gta? It was one big stinky piece of poo pie.

That was said a lot around the release of the DS but from what i've seen the ds has nothing on the N64, like I can't imagine OOT on the DS.

As far as I love the 3D GTA's (in which case I also loved on the PSP), I'd welcome the old school with open arms. I think this would be suited to the DS better than the PSP, the PSP is too powerfull for that format, the DS would be perfect!

Specs of both are pretty similar if checked. The DS has the edge 'on Psp' because of it's catalogue and also it's back catalogue.Whilst the Wii has won the current gen war without actually "being 'hd or bluray' in it" the next war will be an even bigger challenge for ninty. The PsP spec wise pisses all over the DS but the games on offer fail so much in perspective.Innovation ala stylus pisses all over any ps2 formatted game as sales tell us.This tells us nothing as one would expect, as per gaming ideals.Nintendo made 2 superior machines N64 v PS1 and Gamecube vs PS2 and lost hugely on both counts. Then proceed to make DSlite v PsP AND Wii vs PS3 and trounce both in hardware/software sales.Nextgen Ninty has the capibility to use the Wiimote in a decent hardware with a hitachi bluray drive to achieve equal success.

    :)

a nice GTA2 style game would be nice from what a remember the graphics were quite smooth and a bit 3d looking just enough for a nice ds game i'd say.

I think its failure to produce good games in 3D has as much to do with the control scheme as with the hardware. For FPS, trying to hold the DS while moving with the d-pad and looking with the stylus is much too painful. I found the same with Mario 64: couldn't play for more than 4-5 stars without having to stop due to sore hands. 2D is what the DS best and hopefully it will stick to that here

I have to disagree with you here. I think the controls for Metroid Prime Hunters were perfect. They worked amazingly well. And Mario 64 DS was great aswell like. I didn't suffer sore hands or anything.

I doubt that a fully 3d GTA would be possible on the DS. Well, maybe they could but the city would be relatively small, I'd imagine.

I stopped playing it due to the controls.
Using the stylus while holding the ds with the other hand was quite uncomfortable.

Some reviews suggested using the thumb strap was better, but those cheap sods Nintendo didn't include one with the lite

Not just uncomfortable, it actually hurt after a while. I stopped playing it myself for that very reason.

Just about every game I've played on the DS in the last while has involved holding the DS in one hand and using the stylus with the other, its never being a problem for me, esp since I moved to the Lite.

GTA4 could have done with that, having to redo long drives every retry got boring fast.
