Cheque in the door was a welcome surprise, I had no idea i'd been paying too much. It's a couple of grand actually. I got married two years ago, maybe the government decided I deserve some money back! :D

Seriously though, no chance they'll come looking for it back?

I wouldn't worry, the government rarely give out money that you're not entitled to. Enjoy your windwall ;)

That money might be a refund based on the first year of your marriage. The first tax as a married couple is treated differently to subsequent years and results in a refund if you overpaid. I would have thought that Revenue would put the onus on people to somehow know this and make a claim though.

Unless things have changed I think you should be able to make a refund claim for four tax years (2004 to present). That would be well worth sorting out given the amount of cash involved. If I were you I'd ring the tax office to get your marriage accounted for and to ask for advice about claiming a refund.

Married 5 years myself and was paying tax as a single person. Sorted it out recently and got back a nice bit of cash. :)

It could well be that the tax man has noticed you are now married and has given you different allowances. In this case, its in your favour.

Anyone can go to the revenue and ask for "a review" They will look at what you have paid and what you should have paid and then they refund you (hopefully). Its best to go in to them as they will ask you the some questions like do you use bin tags (tax allowable), medical expenses (tax allowable) etc etc. As far as I can remember you can have a review for the last two or three years.

I went into the tax office in The Square, Tallaght.

Not at all true. Revenue quite often make mistakes and can go back as far as they like to revise them (where a taxpayer can only go back 4 years for a refund). I recently had to send back a cheque for €6k that I wasn't entitled to.

OP, you should have received a Notice of assessment with the refund. Read through it and see if it is correct before you cash the cheque. If you don't understand it ring or go into your tax office and get them to explain it. Then enjoy your windfall!

As stated above, you can go back 4 years.
