depp to play the riddler

A thread on SA has been whining about who will play who in the next Batman film from Christopher Nolan for a while now and i'm convinced that if Depp is even a consideration, he would have to pull out something really special to be even remotely good as the Riddler. If he turns it into Jack Sparrow v2, i'll cry.

    Crispin Glover would be better.

Hopefully it will be less about who plays the characters and more about how the character is portrayed. Like The Penguin being a crooked mob boss rather than Burtons freakish vision or Nolans version of The Scarecrow being a psychologist rather than a skinny guy in a costume. Hopefully if the Riddler is next up for the cinema treatment, he'll be a police psychiatrist or something so he has a link to Batman rather than just 'a villain has appeared in Gotham, go beat him up Batman'.

Hopefully the thing I read about David Goyer totally ruling out the Penguin appearing in a future film will be true. I really hate that character.

Anyway yeah, The National Enquirer. Grade A journalism that.

What is the internets obsession with Crispin feckin Glover? The man cannot act and has no career, why would he ever get the job? Every Batman role the guys name pops up. Lets just let Nolan do his thing, he proved 90% of people wrong when he picked Ledger

goyer was one of the writers on both batman nolan reimaginations dude;)

i personally think that if they do make another batman(which hopefully they will)that they do have the riddler as a villian and i think casey affleck would make a perfect riddler in a jesse james character esque way

or just leave the joker in and leave it a year or two(daniel day lewis with a bill the butcher meets the last scene in 'there wil be blood':)

Solely based on appearance i'm afraid. He's a creepy looking guy.

wont be any of the above, no riddler , no penguin.Honestly from what i've heard from sources suggest that it is unlikely that Nolan will do a third and if he does it will feature the joker and villians that have not appeared in any of the movies so far.But its all speculation either way.Reckon if it does happen we will see either Hush maybe a take on th eDark Knight Returns.

I could take Crispin Glover, i hated Johnny Depp as your man from the pirate movie, Casey Affleck i did like up until i seen Gone Baby Gone.

Is it really that up in the air about whether there'll be a sequel? I mean, aren't records being broken at the box office? I doubt Mr. Nolan could put up THAT much of a fight against the studios! And the his films so far have obviously been labours of love, I can't see him needing that much persuasion...

Anyway, the Riddler? Really? Is he that good a villain?

He'd be better suited to the Mad Hatter. Every time I look at the case for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford I see Affleck and instantly think of the Mad Hatter.

I loved him in Gone Baby GOne, thought he gave one of the most years most understated and compelling performances.

I persoally wouldn't mind johnny depp, it was mentioned on another post that the riddler could be a serial killer and keeps leaving clues for framing batman for murders.

as long it wouldnt be johhny depp as the riddler if you know what i mean, look at heath ledger i wouldn't have said his premormance would but as convincing by a long shot and Depp is as good an actor as Ledger.

I was referring to Glover, not Goyer, The Freeman :p

Makes sense to me. Although I'd prefer to see David Tennant in the role, purely because he looks like the riddler to me

Heath Ledger always struck me as a kind of Johnny Depp light, I don't know why...

    sorry dude my bad!

heard it on mtv news in the gym an hour ago that 'depp is tipped to play the riddler'

    media sheep:)

Depp might be a good riddler. Like someone said already, the vast majority hated the thought of Ledger being the Joker, but look how that ended up.

At the San Diego ComicCon, Zack Snyder mentioned that he'd love to have a stab at The Dark Knight Returns. Apparently Frank Miller's quite enthusiastic about the idea. I wouldn't mind seeing that at all.

However, as for the Nolan franchise, forget the Riddler, the Penguin, The Mad Hatter, and whatever other villain in the rogues gallery of Batman. Even Catwoman would be a difficult thing to pull off. If they're going anywhere, stick with the Joker, Scarecrow and possibly bring back Two-Face. There's every possibility that that could happen.

Well, let's not be too hasty here. I mean, Johnny's a terrific actor, and he has the whole dark thing down to a T. He could be good for the Riddler. I have a picture of how the new Riddler should look and act, and i think Johnny could perfectly into that. I do think it's odd that he's never been approached for a Batman movie, not even by Tim Burton. Crispin is ok in his own creepy way. But not for the Riddler. I do hope they leave the Penguin out though. As much as i love him in Returns, the Chris Nolan films have a terrific realistic quality about them, and if they brought in the Penguin, the realism would go straight out the window. But bring in the Riddler for sure. But re-work him, so instead of being being as hilarious as Jim Carrey, keep some humour, but keep it dark and nasty, the way Heath played the Joker.

No they didn't. At least not on this film board.

That said tho Depp would suck in this movie. The riddler would suck in this movie. The riddler would suck. Part 3 needs Catwoman and then a swift close before the shark is jumped.

I don't think they should use Catwoman. Again, she's not realistic. How she came to be in Returns has no realism, so i think Nolan will steer clear of her. Having said that, imagine Angelina Jolie in a leather catsuit with a whip? :D

    No no no.

Angelina Jolie would make an awful Catwoman.

Someone mentioned to me today that there was a nod to Catwoman in the dark knight.

When Lucious makes Bruce Wayne the new suit, he is asked "Will this protect be from dogs"
    Lucious responds "Cats maybe"

LOL, i didn't mean she'd be a good Catwoman, i just mean imagine her in leather with a whip ;)

Yep, there was a little nod. But i think it was just said in passing. It wasn't like what they did at the end of Begins with the Joker card.

Aw seriously, does every bit of Batman related news/gossip/rumour need its own bleedin' thread?
Seriously, I thought BB and TDK were both class but this is getting seriously OTT!

The Depp article has been posted in the other Batman threads.

Ah, that's just the way it works. We can't tie everything about Batman into one thread, because we talk about so many different aspects about him. Like the Johnny Depp story, we wouldn't know that it's in other threads, because we mightn't read them all. So this just makes it easier for the users :)

Can they only buy the rights for certain main characters? Just wondering why it would be riddler and penguin again. Was Tim Burtons Batman so long ago that there's a generation which hasn't seen it or sumfin?

The Riddler was in Batman Forever, which Joel Schumacher directed. But i suppose Tim Burton did produce it, so it kinda counts. But no, that's what what they are doing. They are just trying to select the most popular villians for the movies. And i think now, it's time for Riddler to get a re-working. If they were to go for some that haven't been used, i say maybe Hangman, Firefly, Hush, and if they must throw some realism out the window, a re-working of Clayface might be cool :)

    Emily Blunt for Catwoman?

Eric Bana for Dr. Freeze? (yes, there's work that needs to be done on the character to distance it from Arnie, but still)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,727 ✭✭✭✭Sherifu

I don't think they should try to bring back Mr. Freeze.

    Give Clay Face now. Plz&tks.

I don't think Catwoman would necessarily be so unrealistic, I mean, basically just give an unhinged woman a whip and some messed up morals, she doesn't need to be able to beat up batman, just be a nice foil with a birra sexual tension...

Clayface would make an awesome addition. I also have to agree that Angelina Jolie would make a terrible, terrible Catwoman. It's not just based on looks, they have to be able to pull it off and actually act. Which, for the most part, Jolie just can't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

Have to disagree. Jolie is a fine actress.

    Mighty Heart
    Girl, Interuppted
    Changeling

Great acting performances by Jolie in each one.

People usually think of Jolie the performer from the various blockbuster films (of which there are many), which doesn't usually call for her to stretch her acting chops - those films usually just call for her to look good while pulling off the action stuff.

I think Nolan could definitely get a great acting peformance out of her as Catwoman :)

    ----

Don't want Riddler in the next film. Blitzkrieg's theory in the other thread re: some Black Skull character + a Catwoman combo sounds good.

I think Ben Foster would make a brilliant Riddler. His presence can be immenese at times (see 3:10 to Yuma for examples)...

Angelina Jolie for Catwoman? For God's sake, its not a who looks best in leather contest. They tried that with Halle Berry (who has an Oscar to her name) and it didn't work.
Jolie just doesn't strike me a s a good Catwoman.
