Recommend me some software for my new N95 8GB :)

Right so as a pressie to myself, I upgraded to a Nokia N95 8GB yesterday through meteor (who thankfully - unlike the others - still don't put any crappy branding on the phones/software).

First impressions are it's a great, and (more importantly) fast phone with tons of features (wireless probably being the best).

But I've transferred some AVIs from the pc to test and they won't play with the preloaded stuff so has anyone a recommendation for a free (or cheap) but good player that'll support all the current formats?

Any other software I should have? (I looked through the sticky but the last post in the linked thread was 2007) - I already installed MSN earlier.

    Cheers!

    DivX Mobile should do...

    http://labs.divx.com/MobileCommunity

Think you have to sign up first.

Apart from that, the apps i would use most are Opera Mini browser, Gmail app, Nokia Maps, google maps, Yahoo Go, google reader, Shozu (for mobile blogging), flickr, youtube mobile etc.

    Cheers,

N95 8GB is a good phone - i'll give you that, however it was just far too flimsy for my liking. Sold mine on after less than a months use. A guy i know got one the same time as me and his is in some state right now, slider is far too loose etc.

In comparison to the N95 it seems a bit shoddier build really - my brother has a year old N95 and it's in great nick and seems less flimsy and brittle.

My opinion only of course - spec of the phone is still great, but for the price i don't think the build is good enough.

I ciuldn't disagree about the build quality ant more. I had the original N95 before it and I upgraded to the 8gb. I have to say that it is a totally different and IMO a far superior phone. My only qualm in general is I'd love if there was an option to constantly have the screen turned sideways.

you could always set it that the screen moves with the phone

so when you are writing a text, the screen faces the correct way. Turn it on its side, and the screen follows

There is no setting for that on the N95. And if there is I await eagerly to hear about how to do it!!!

I have mine working that way you can get apps to use in the inbuilt accelerometer , google RockNScroll should do it, you have to sign the app your self which is a bit of a pain.

^+1 I have the 8gb now and I had the n95 before that too. The 8gb is far superior in build quality and has faster firmware in my opinion.

O.P. Where did you get the msn app??

I know very little about programming of any sort so even the most basic stuff goes over my head. Is that something thats done on a computer before being transferrred or is it done on the actual phone?

    Light Sensor
    Font Size
    Power Save Time out
    Welcome Note/Logo
    Light Time Out.

Slightly off-topic, but any idea how much the phone is on a meteor upgrade on the 'talk 60' package?

I paid €169 for it 2 weeks ago on Meteor Talk 60 upgrade.

Bit of a difference in those prices. norrie rugger where'd you get your info from? The price can't have been lowered that much in two weeks, could it?

you might need to update your firmware?

Use Nokia software updater, its very simple. Download it from Nokia here. They give detailed instructions so you shouldn't have any problems, and if it doesn't need update, if its the latest already to wont do anything. If you find their is a new phone, you can change your product code but don't cross that bridge till you have to.

remember to back up all your contacts texts pics etc using the back feature of the N-series Pc suite which you can download from nokia or on the disc that came with the phone. Use Pc sync to confirm a saving of the contacts. Any trouble just post

You may need to changes your product code if the Nokia software Updater
tells you there are no updates available

No such plan. Talk 60 is the cheapest plan, it's 169e. Then it goes 129e, 99e, 49e.

Thanks a million norrie rugger. That worked a treat. I've fallen in love with my N95 all over again.

    Below are the price plans
I was on Talk 200 and wanted to upgrade to Talk 300.
Also wanted new phone. Got N95 on Talk 300 for €90
Was told it would be €169 if i stayed on Talk 200

    Meteor Talk 60
    Meteor Talk 200
    Meteor Talk 300
    Meteor Talk 400
    Meteor Talk 600

And I apologise, I was thinking of Talk 300 as 30

when updating the firmware, is it necessary to back up all the programs i've downloaded or will it not affect them? thanks

Yes back them up. Also if you have any films like Spiderman 3 or the likes you may also lose the activation keys for these.
