I'm just wondering, what's people's stance and why, about taking their children to a film that's set above their age limit and their stance about getting their children, video games above their age limit?

This thread was sparked off by the batman thread and it's been one of the questions I've always wondered about. I'm 19 and I'm not a parent. I've never quite understood why a movie rated 15, is so bad for a 14 year old or even a 12 year old.

The age thing is just a guideline IMO. As a parent you make judgement calls yourself. Gremlins is 15's for example, but do I think my 10 year old is mature enough to watch it? Sure. Do I think he's mature enough to watch a soft porn which might be 15's? No way.

Video games....well....again you make a judgement call. I play(ed) a lot of games myself. Wouldn't give a 10 year old GTA (Grand Theft Auto) for example, but I'd let him play UT (Unreal Tournament) with the gore turned off.

edit: As to why? Well, it's about how it will affect the child. I think kids can get frightened by movies whether they're real or not. You should a 10 year old Aliens and see how well he sleeps that night. ;) Same for GTA....I wouldn't want my son thinking it's hilarious to go beating up hookers and what not.

Like mentioned above the cert is a guide line - although i did see a group of youn teens being stopped at my local cimema because they weren't old enough IMO they were about 14 - 16 and the film was 15's

The new batman film isn't aimed at kids and has adult themes. However it has a 15A feet meaning children can go accompanied. The adult plot isn't going to upset a child but some of the violence and terror might

IFCO has taken a similar line to the UK classifications office by issuing some detail on their website (www.ifco.ie) on the theme of the film and scenes that may upset children

Personally I believe every child is different. I'd rather my children (I don't have any yet) watch the film with me rather than them watching it without me which they will do anyway!

Parents should exercise responsibilty without censoring films. Personally I would be more concerned about scenes of horror I'd disturbing images etc rather than sex or run of the mill violence

Went to see it last night and couldn't believe there was a bloke there with what looked to be a boy and girl of about 6 and 4 respectively. Completely unsuitable for a kid that age, practically guaranteed nightmares.
