Hey, been listening to hip hop for about a year, just wondering if anyone can recommend some stuff to listen to. I'm into the more old-school, jazzy side of things (Tribe, De la Soul) but I love some of the grittier stuff (Company Flow, Cannibal Ox, for example) which has something to say. Any help?

What type of lyrics are you into? Deep/Braggadocio/punchline?

Try grabbing Atmospheres - God Loves Ugly its a bit different to the stuff you mentioned but the beats sound gritty and the rhyme style is old (although the topics are modern).

Braintax (this is british hiphop just to warn you) - Album=Biro Funk

    Heres an example...

    Messiah J and The Expert

Should do you for a while if they take your fancy...

I suppose I like the deep and punchline type, thanks for the recommendations, will definitely check them out!

That Atmosphere album I mentioned should suit so, it has a mixture.

If you like Company Flow then pick up El-P's and Big Jus's solo stuff.

I'll sleep when you're dead is a fantastic album and Fantastic Damage isn't too far behind.

Black Mamba Serums 2 is a brilliant album also by Big Jus, his latest one is great too, cant remember the name at the moment.
[edit: The magic of google reminded me that it's calle Poor People Day]

As mentioned by Pen, God loves Ugly is a great choice too.

Throw in a bit of Aesop Rock or Sole too.

Are any of the Vordul Megilah or Vast Aire solo stuff worth picking up?

Heard of Aesop Rock alright, haven't heard any stuff, only dude off that label I've checked out is Mr. Lif. (apart from the others I've mentioned)

Yeah, have Fantastic Damage and I'll Sleep When You're Dead, have to say not too impressed with the latter at all, much prefer FD.

Will definitely check out Big Jus, thanks!

    Aesop Rock is Hiphops Bovril.

Vast Aire, Im not a fan personally, bores me.

Maybe Personal Journals by Sage Francis would be up your alley, although its seriously soulful and deep.

HOW did I forget this one, BROTHER ALI should be EXACTLY what youre after, jazy beats and a lovely mixture of deep lyrical and punchline raps and an old school sound. Get 'Rites of Passage.'

Ì like Vast Aires solo stuff, Look Mom No Hands is a good album but it's quite different to the C. Ox stuff.

As well as forgetting Brother Ali (awesome), i'm sure there are alot more we cant think of right now...Buck 65 perhaps, a good starting point for him is Talkin' Honky Blues.
