What will be the final worldwide box office tally for The Dark Knight?

I cant remember Ive seen such box office hype figures wise for a film since maybe the third Lord Of The Rings film. Except with this one Im hearing grown Irish men saying they're going back to see it again (its normal for the American fanboys to do this :)).

As of Tuesday its total worldwide gross stands at $462.2 million. In 11 days.

11 days! Ok so that not counting pre-screening days and a film always makes its most money cinema wise in the first 2 weeks but those numbers are still crazy.

So my question is how much will the final worldwide box office tally be? Could it top Titanic? I doubt it. $1,845,034,188 worldwide will never be topped unless Cameron decides to re-do Gone With The Wind ;)

Next is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with $1,119,563,306

The rest of the Top 5 looks like this:

    3) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $1,066,179,725

    4) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $976,475,550

    5) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End $960,996,492 :(

(These are all unadjusted for inflation, the other list is a different kettle of fish)

So, logically then, how much can Gotham's dark one do? As I said, I think it'll be all the repeat viewings that make this the 3rd or 4th highest grossing film of all time and finish just shy of a billion.

Oh and it was fantastic btw, that goes without saying ;)

Wheres the "who cares" option

I reckon, worst-case scenario, it'll get into the mid-600mil category, 100mil ahead of Iron Man.

But if it continues to be as popular as Spiderman 3 (890mil) was last year, then it could potentially (but very unlikely) have a chance at knocking Jurassic Park (915mil) out of the top 10.

I'm gonna guess it'll take about 760mil and knock the Da Vinci Code out of the top 25 ;)

It won't beat Titanic. That dragged in people who never normally go to films (older people, groups of girls, school groups etc) with its blandness. To top Titantic it'd have to drag in the Mama Mia and Sex in the City crowd too which I doubt it will.

Id go 800 - 900 mil tops. It should have good legs considering the amount of rubbish (Bar Hellboy 2, Tropic Thunder) thats its up against for the month of August. Regular movie goers would rather see it again than watch Brendan Fraiser or Vin Diesel in action.

I'd say it'll be just shy off the 1 Billion mark. It'll beat LOTR but not Titanic, that is collosal and it be hard to see a movie crack that record.

Unless Cameron does it again with Avatar.

    Id say about $900million.
I'd love to see it knock Titanic off its pedestal but cant see it happening. Also I'll be sad when Jurassic Park finally leaves the top ten. :(

I'd love to say it'll top Titanic, but with it being near $500 million, but nowhere near $2 billion, i can't see it topping it. It's a bloody shame though :( Still, i agree with the other poster too. It'll be sad seeing Jurassic park going out of the top 10. It's my fave movie :)

    Another record...
The Dark Knight hit the $400 million domestic mark on Monday, hitting the impressive total in a record 18 days. The previous record was held by Shrek 2 which took 43 days to reach $400 million. The Dark Knight has grossed $400.3 million through Monday and looks to be on its way to becoming just the second film ever to gross $500 million domestically (the other being Titanic, which grossed over $600 million).

Meanwhile, The Dark Knight continues to be a hit overseas as well. The film has earned $202.5 million internationally to bring its worldwide total to $602.5 million.
    ONE BIIIIILLION DOLLARS!!

Yes, I would say definitely now.

Can we all collectivily have our memory wiped with regards to titanic! And the money that was spent to see that well travisty returned to us?!

No not going to happen dam!
I know i have to see it again! I would love to see it wipe out titanic, but think it will start running out of steam soon enough im sure, poor ol'jurassic park. It will be missed.

    Move over Spider-Man...

The Dark Knight has surpassed Spider-Man to become the highest grossing superhero movie ever in the USA. Here is the top ten.

    1. The Dark Knight (2008) - $405.7 million
    2. Spider-Man (2002) - $403.7 million
    3. Spider-Man 2 (2004) - $373.5 million
    4. Spider-Man 3 (2007) - $336.5 million
    5. Iron Man (2008) - $315.8 million
    6. The Incredibles (2004) - $261.4 million
    7. Batman (1989) - $251.1 million
    8. X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) - $234.3 million
    9. Hancock (2008) - $217.2 million
    10. X2: X-Men United (2003) - $214.9 million

The original Batman made 251 mil back in 1989! When you adjust for inflation thats serious moola too. Im predicting the Dark Knight's final domestic (US) box office will be around 540 mil.

    Update:
Despite two more wide releases having entered theaters on Wednesday, The Dark Knight topped the box office for a fourth straight weekend, adding an estimated $26 million for a massive domestic total of $441.5 million. If the estimate holds, then the Christopher Nolan-directed film has surpassed Shrek 2 ($441.226 million) to climb to the third spot on the all-time domestic blockbuster list, trailing just Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope ($460.998 million) and Titanic ($600.788 million). Warner Bros. Pictures said it expects "Dark Knight" to end up with about $520 million domestically. The movie cost $185 million to make.

Yes but when adjusted for inflation or number-of-tickets sold, the movie's gross isn't as amazing as the total gross reflects.

    Funny you should say that, I came across this earlier;
    The real dollar top ten...

Here are the top ten domestic grossing films when adjusting for inflation.

    1. Gone with the Wind (1939) - $1,430,476,000
    2. Star Wars (1977) - $1,261,086,700
    3. The Sound of Music (1965) - $1,008,300,900
    4. E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial (1982) - $1,004,328,700
    5. The Ten Commandments (1956) - $927,480,000
    6. Titanic (1997) - $908,688,900
    7. Jaws (1975) - $906,798,000
    8. Doctor Zhivago (1965) - $878,879,000
    9. The Exorcist (1973) - $782,826,200
    10. Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs (1937) - $771,720,000

It'll never even make that Top Ten let alone its current Top 3 standing.

Hmmm, so its already got 704mil Worldwide, and still has to be released in a few countries, which means im gonna have to revise my earlier estimate (760mil)!

I reckon now it'll make 900mil, scraping by Harry Potter 4 but failing to knock Jurassic Park off its #10 spot.

    This weekends update:

Batman finally falls from the top spot...
Tropic Thunder debuted #1 at the box office this weekend, finally knocking The Dark Knight out of the top spot. The comedy brought in $26 million over the weekend and $37 million since opening on Wednesday, both numbers well below expectations. The film had the highest per theater average of any in the top ten with $7,833 per theater. The film has a budget of $92 million.

The Dark Knight fell out of the top spot and into the #2 slot, earning $16.7 million to raise its massive total gross to $471.4 million. The film is now the #2 highest grossing film ever (domestically) behind Titanic (which sits at $600 million).

Its 800m at the moment, and not doing great in some big territories (Japan etc) but still has to open in Germany and a few other places. It wont hit a billion, but 950 is a possibility. As for the "real" top 10, the world of Gone with the Wind is far removed from the high-pressure, week after week blockbuster competition of today. They're two completely different times and can't be directly compared IMO. If nothing else, TDK's performance, particularly in America, is nothing short of astounding

if you allow for inflation , i recall seeing a list of the top 10 films in terms of admission tickets sold , titanic was only about number 7 , the sound of music is at number 2 while gone with the wind is way out in front , in fact gone with the wind took almost double what titanic did in terms of tickets sold
gone with the wind was an event film like no other , before or since

Where The Dark Knight stands now...
The Dark Knight has now earned $489.1 million domestically and $870.4 million worldwide. The film is now the second highest grossing film (domestically) ever behind Titanic which remains untouchable at $600.7 million, and is #15 on the highest grossing films (worldwide) ever list with $870.4 million. It should be able to climb all the way up to #6 on the worldwide gross list before its theater run ends. The #6 spot is currently held by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with $938.5 million.

What it was up against ....
Tropic Thunder held on to the #1 spot at the box office this weekend, earning $16.1 million to raise its total gross to $65.6 million in two weeks. The film had a budget of $95 million.

The House Bunny debuted at #2 with $15.1 million and had the highest per theater average of any film in the top ten with $5,563 per theater. The film is off to a good start considering its $25 million budget.

Death Race debuted at #3 with $12.2 million. The film had a budget of $45 million.

The Dark Knight fell two spots to #4 in its sixth weekend, earning $10.3 million to raise its monster total to $489.1 million.

    The latest

The film keeps on bringing in the money...
The Dark Knight has entered the top ten worldwide box office grosses list, now sitting at the #10 spot with $919.1 million. The film should easily move into the #7 spot by next week.

The film's domestic total sits at $502.4 million, the second best ever behind Titanic ($600.7 million).

I only went to see it last Saturday and I was thinking at the time that I didn't need to book tickets in advance. When my partner and I got to the cinema they didn't have two seats for us together because the movie was nearly full.I was shocked that a film that has been on general release for nearly two months was nearlly sold out.Obviously some people are going to see it more than once.I know one guy in work has already gone to see it three times.I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about. It's a decent film but it aint know masterpiece. It was too long and the last twenty minutes just seemed like a load of noise and confusing editing to me.
I doubt I'd mind the length watching this at home though.

    Updated domestic and worldwide grosses....

The Dark Knight has now grossed $512.1 million domestically, the #2 highest domestic gross ever behind Titanic ($600.7 million).

The film's worldwide gross is now at $949.4 million, the 6th highest worldwide total ever. The #5 spot is still held by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End with $961 million. Titanic is #1 with $1.8 billion.

Wow, so its still got legs! Its definitely gonna catch Pirates 2 in 3rd spot.

There's also talk of rereleasing TDK in Jan as Oscar bait. So potential for more $$$ there.

And Jurassic Park now pushed out of the top 10. Sad :(

Movie positions itself to get Oscar buzz...

The Dark Knight will likely be re-released in IMAX in January in a move designed to generate more attention from the Academy Awards. There is also talk of re-releasing the film in regular theaters.

Some critics believe that Heath Ledger will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker while Christopher Nolan could be nominated for Best Director.

A re-release, coupled with buzz from the Oscars, will further increase The Dark Knight's massive box office gross and push it up closer to Titanic's $600.7 million.

    Update from the weekend

    It's up to #5...

The Dark Knight has moved up to #5 on the all time worldwide box office gross list. The film now sits at $966.6 million ($517.6 domestic, $448.9 million international). The film's next target is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone which sits at the #4 spot with $976.5 million. Dark Knight should pass it within the next week to 10 days.

    1. Titanic (1997) - $1,842,900,000
    2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) - $1,119,300,000
    3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) - $1,066,200,000
    4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) - $976,500,000
    5. The Dark Knight (2008) - $966,600,000

If this gets an Imax re-release in January then I might just be forced to eat my "it'll never beat Titanic" words :)

    But I doubt it.

For now Im predicting an overall final place at number 2. Which is still really incredible for a superhero movie.

Now the 4th highest grossing film of all time

    Wiki

As of September 29, 2008, The Dark Knight has grossed $524,599,547 in the domestic box office, breaking the previous record of the fastest film to hit $500 million[123] and $460,000,000 in other countries.[124][125] As of September 29, 2008, its total worldwide gross stands at $984,599,547, and is the fourth highest grossing film of all time unadjusted for inflation

It'll surely topple the Billion mark in the next ten days.

Well its currently sitting on $997mil. So with some favourable oscar noms on Thursday + the re-release in IMAX, I reckon it could just about get the 3mil needed to reach the 1 billion mark. A Best Picture / Best Director double nom (which is doubtful) would get it 10mil max i reckon.
