anyone tried (and succeeded) getting a laptop running linux onto the college wireless network? Is it hard? I assume that ISS wash their hands of it?

    It's possible. I couldn't do it, although I'm not a linux expert tbh :p

I know lots of people that have done it, apparently it isn't hard, though I don't know the details. I just know it's not hard enough to merit giving up, if that was your dilemma.

Its not hard - works fine and is pretty easy to do (and I'm no linux expert)

    Ah here: For ubuntu.

Click on the wireless icon -> Connect to Other Wireless Network -> Change Wirless Security to WPA Enterprise ->

    Network Name: TCDWifi
    Identity: College Username
    Password: College Password

    Thats it!

iss do usually wash their hands of any *nix based stuff. you should try netsoc, they are the best people to try

That actually works! Which surprised me... it didn't originally so I tried putting the key type details from the ISS website instructions for XP and so on, which also didn't work, and then I played with the script jmccrohan linked to for a bit... then I went back and just put in my username and password and it connected.... It's possible I changed something in between that made it work, but I'm not sure what...

I also kept getting disconnected in the Mathsoc room but it seems to work fine in the Hamilton library :)

Hmm, i did almost the same as zaraba, but my settings are slightly different. It works for me and a friend using Ubuntu(who gave me them :D) too. I set it up back in May/June, never had any problems with them- I wonder if both our settings work? I use the settings in the screenshot below(obviously use a real username and password), having registered before in Windows. I find that if it doesn't connect, just move, it's usually bad signal. Main thing to remember is to change the gnome proxy from System->Preferences->Network Proxy to something like the below:

And the settings(left click on the network icon in the top right panel and select Connect to Existing Wireless Network:

You shouldn't need to change the GNOME Proxy settings as its a pain then when you aren'tin college (I am that lazy - just set up profiles in Firefox.

I find I need to change the gnome proxy so stuff like apt-get or wget is able to connect, but it's been a while since I've been in college to check on that
