Probably best going with the Studio then. It's stylishh, and cheaper than an equivelant XPS. That said, I have an XPS 1530 and am quite happy with it.

Avoid the XPS 1330 for the time being, it has a design fault with its heatsink assembly that is exacerbating a weakness in the GPU.

is the xps not more stylish?? ya it was the M1530 i was thinking of. but ya can get a studio one with great spec for a starting price of the M1530. Hopefully 2morrow there will be better deals

its hardly worth getting bluray player on it???

Dont get it unless you intend to use it. It's pricy, and you'll need a decent GPU to go with it. XPS is very stylish, and a good bit lighter than the Studio. It's made of better materials, and is generally moar of a premium product.

Ignore anyone who tells you that the 1530's GPU will blow up. It really is not as big a problem as the inquirer is encouraging sheep to think it is.

You will get a good laptop out of the 1530, but be prepared to pay for it. They don't makle sense until your paying above 1000-1200.

If your thinking you can just about afford the bottom end of the XPS range, don't go for it. You'll get a better Studio or Inspiron at that price.

how much is a studio vs an xps? stick with the studio if it has what you need sure, no point paying for stuff you dont need

Not sure about shared graphics but dedicated GPUs like nvidia or ATI will have HDMI outs on them

The inquirer likes to mince its words for ratings sure, but there are other sources. Im preferential to gizmodo and the consumerist myself.

The fact of the matter is the cards are faulty and are not built to handle the heat cycles on a laptop. Now dell and HP patched the issue with a BIOS fix that gives the fan a new constant minimum RPM to try and extend the life of those cards but they will still eventually fail from stress. Chance of card failure is slightly less than it was, but to cover your ass entirely avoid the 8400 and 8600 cards if you can. But if you do get one and it does fail Dell will cover the warranty, naturally.

Well i have no intention of using it for gaming, But is everything else ok??

no intention but it gets us all in the end... mwahahaha

yeah im hoping it should be fine. im not aware of any other major dell issues. though people ive read from say getting the multi-year warranties is a great investment: accident damage is a must (says me) because the cost of it pays for itself once yo crack the LCD screen.

I find it hard to believe Dell are still shipping laptops with faulty GPUs. I mean, you look at their product line and there's tonnes of them still available with 8400 and 8600 cards. Sure, they just launched a new Vostro (2510) the other day, that comes equipped with 8400M GS.

Im not saying they're NOT shipping faulty cards, just that it makes no sense that they would continue shipping the cards if indeed the problem was as severe and widespread as claimed.

Im keeping an eye on the situation, but theres no definitive answers at this stage.

well the problem is nvidia is being very very hum on the issue. maybe theyve had closed door talks with dell and HP on the matter, I dont know. The problem seems to stem from heat management issues so maybe their going with heat management fixes over replacing the line of GPUs. You lose a small portion of your battery life for the extra fanspeed but at the safety of your GPU so I guess it works out. Newer laptop lines would (hopefully) take into account the defect and have their own workarounds.
