hi all , I have a new dell inspiron 1525 laptop and just bought the latest flight simulator x and also a new speedlink black widow joystick to use on it.
I have installed the drivers correctly but every time I plug it in , either before or when the game has booted up I get the following message.

"windows host process rundll32 has stopped working. windows will now close this program
a problems caused the program to stop working correctly and notify you if a solution is available."

I have been in touch with dell who tell me that only the hardware is under warranty and been in touch with microsift who tell me because I bought the pc with a oem version and not a retail version , they dont support it ( bull****)
So I am looking for someones expertise in resolving this problem any ideas , cheers all

I'd check to make sure you've got the latest drivers (is this it? the drivers listed there are dated 18/07/08, maybe they've already fixed this)
Failing that, it might be worth using their support form... maybe they've encountered this problem before.

    Yeah that sounds about right.

This "oh it's a windows issue" is a common cop-out when people run out of ideas and don't want it to be their problem any more... I'm pretty sure I've used it myself when I worked in tech support.
Did they happen to mention what specific issue it was and what microsoft should do to fix it? Did they direct you to a specific microsoft knowledgebase article? No? Thought not.

It smells like a problem with the driver to me, like there's something about your windows install/environment that it wasn't equipped to deal with... so it's going a bit mental and crashing.
Sure, rundll32 is a windows process, but as I understand it, it's only a lauch-pad for other software... presumably in this case a utility related to the joystick.

    You could try running windows-update.
Try installing the latest chipset drivers.
    Then install the joystick again.

If you've no luck, you could always just return the joystick to the shop and get a different one... like something popular from logitech or microsoft that have enough people using it, that it's bound to have a lot more of it's problems discovered and fixed already... that's what I'd do.

I have been having the same problem recently. I even uninstalled the newest Vista Codecs and installed the newest version and it fixed it temporarily. It seems to come back now and again. I think it may have something to do with different types of mp3's, (encoded differently) and maybe compatibility issues. Also DivX files could be causing problems. Some people say to disable thumbnail views as it could be causing problems.
