French Drains

    I need to put in French drains around my old farmhouse that is on a sloped site. I want to channel water around and away from the house. It is an old random stone and rubble walled house with shallow foundations. There will be gravel over the French drain and around the entire house - no concrete footpaths here mate!

    How far away from the existing walls of the house should the French drain be so as to (a) maximise drainage and (b) not undermine or weaken the shallow foundations?

    I would extend out , at top of site level anyhow , to 1000mm around the building to allow for everyday external circulation and maintenance . I would take advice from an experienced engineer , who should see the site , on how deep the gravel dig should be and how and where to divert the water

    Yeah, that makes sense thanks. It is a job for an engineer alright.
