De la Hoya wants one more big fight before he hangs up his gloves. It would have been after the Mayweather fight until he retired. I imagine if Cotto had have beaten Margarito Oscar would have looked to fight him. I still think it should be Cotto.

Does anybody have any suggestion as to who De La Hoya should fight if not Pacquiao?

i could see him beating Calzaghe, i know he's lighter but i think he's as strong and a better fighter! or possibly Hatton!

Oscar is streets ahead of Joe, but if they met it would be a one sided TKO win for Cal!!!

    Oscar should fight Williams.

i dont see why bren, Calzaghe would be taylor made for Oscar imo..oscar is at least his size if not bigger naturally. would definetly not be a foregone conclusion!

Oscar hasn't the stamina or the legs at this stage to out box Joe. He won't hurt Joe all that much and will simply be slapped into submission. He is also smaller and won't be as physically strong. Paul, Oscar IMO can't win against Cal!!

In fairness I never seen him beating Mayweather or Cotto. Maybe an outside chance with Mayweather. I see it as a pointless fight but one thats pretty much win win for both fighters.

DLH wins: he retires on a win as p4p numero uno. Pac loses no credability due to the massive jump in weight

Pac wins... nuff said, he gets even more worship. Horrible for DLH though, be like pickin on the smallest guy in the class and having your @$$ handed to you. Suppose he can bow out quoting Hatton "I fell short of becoming the worlds number one p4p" If he loses I reckon he stays on and pays Hatton a visit.

I see DLH winning and Pac going home with a few bruises and $20,000,000

Oscar has a 4 inch height advantage. That's a joke if it goes ahead. I'm a huge Manny Pacquaio fan, but giving away 4 inches in height to a boxer of De La Hoya's ability, even if he is 35, is a bit silly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,378 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

I doubt Pacquaio could even beat Hatton and De La Hoya would certainly cream Hatton. I don't blame Manny, in his position i'd take 10 million plus to get beaten around ring for a few rounds before being knocked out. Is there anyone here who really thinks Pacman can beat DLH?

Paul, I know you don't like Calzaghe, but in all seriousness that's a ridiculous post.

Even if you thought he could beat him, to say he's as strong as a fella who walks around at near 14 stone, when he started out as a lightweight himself is just lunacy !!

He was very obviously not as strong as Felix Sturm and Hopkins at MIDDLEweight. Actually he wasn't even as strong as Vargas at LIGHTMIDDLE, even though he beat him and yet you think he's as strong as a very big supermiddle ???

Calzaghe was never a big puncher, 1 Ko in his whole career early on.
People dont realise how big Oscar is, he's huge for his weight.

De la hoya is 5' 10.5" and has fought and won at 160 and has a reach of 73" and has as big a build as joe. and has proved he can fight at different weights.

Calzaghe is 5' 11" and only moved up from 166-168 in his last fight and would have to drop back to about 166 to make this fight.

if both weighed 166 DLH would be bigger.

De la hoya loves to fight an opponent who comes at him, and i remember saying mayweather was stronger than Hatton and everyone laughed at that, most ate humble pie afterwards in fairness, im a good judge of this and genuinely dont see joe as been stronger than de la hoya, and if he is its not considerable.

would be a good fight, and not a miss match like you's might think.

Oscar's peak and most effective weight was 140-147. When he rose in weight, he diminished and we are talking 5-6 years ago. He has diminished even
further now and just because he may be big enough, will not see him win or even be competitive. He hasn't the stamina and strength combined to be a threat at 160 and above. He will weigh in at the weight, but when he goes to pull the trigger, it just won't be there in any effective way.

Cal will be fighting a smaller man who has less pop than Kessler, HOP, Lacy etc. Cal will have no reason to fear a KO shot and will have no reason to fear being out worked or out boxed, as Oscar's legs are also gone. He cannot win this fight and will be thoroughly beaten

What? I agree, Joe would beat Oscar to death in around 7 rounds, but for ME, since Joe destroyed Lacy, he's been pfp ahead of Oscar. After all, who was Oscar fighting in the same period? Mayorga, thats who. With the benefit of retrospect, Joes wins over Hopkins, Lacy, Kessler would suggest that he was a better pfp fighter than Oscar all along.

    Lacy?

This is hardly a world class fighter and most boxing fans and experts know well
how poor Lacy really was. All hype and no substance.

The men Oscar fought thru his career are leagues ahead of Jeff bloody Lacy

    HOP?

A 43 year old has been who couldn't even put up a fight.

    Kessler?

Had a decent chin and punch, but slow and predictable.

Look, Oscar at peak was a fantastic fighter who fought everybody and beat almost everybody. His resume is so superior to Joe's

Hero, if you honestly believe that Cal has fought the better opposition than Oscar, I believe you are deluded!

Id rather see DLH fight Jones, Wright, Trinidad if he were to move up in weight. Jones even said he would come down considerably to fight him.not that i think any of those fights should really go ahead
DLH wouldnt do this and its obvious he wants to fight at or near his best weight with the most beatable big name out there.
If Kostya Tszyu was still around and operating at fringe world class level that would be a good farewell fight.

slow ?, come off it . Kessler is by no means slow, if he was he wouldn't have been able to beat Mundine. A fight that those who say Kessler is unproven should watch.

Sure, Oscar fought a lot of pfp comp.

    Whittaker- LOST to him

    Tito- LOST to him

Quartey- probably lost to him too, but I liked his 12th round display.

    Mozley- Lost to him, Twice.

Vargas- beat him. Damaged goods mind.

Whoever mentioned his win/loss record. I said his opp was far superior to Cal's and since you mention his win/loss record, Whitaker was beaten, and I had Oscar the winner in this bout. I also saw him lose a very very close bout to a peak Mosley, who was an absolute amazing talent. He beat Mosley second time round but got really robbed. He coasted V tito and lost a disputed decision. Vargas he beat, Ruelas, Gatti, Oba Carr, Chavez (who was past it, but thorougly whupped), Molina, Hernandez and of course those you mentioned

If your suggesting that Joe was a better fighter than Oscar when both are at there peaks then your clueless!

De la hoya will go down as 1 of the all time greats, if calzaghe goes unbeaten he'll be remembered but not in the same way as true greats like odlh, ali, leonard, robinson etc..if he loses any fight he'll barely be remembered outside of britain..

The Calzaghe hatred here is unreal.

Oscar could not have lived with Hearns and Duran in their primes. Or Hagler.

    Calzaghe could have.

That for me says it all.

    Oscar a better fighter? Please.....

Calzaghe is a good fighter but you can't really compare him with Oscar, Calzaghe stayed in Britain too long.

You can't really judge on potential you judge on what a person does, Oscar fought the best in his prime ,Calzaghe didn't ,as much as I like Calzaghe you can't say he's better than Oscar.

The Calzaghe hatred here is unreal.

LOL .... you're just as bad as Cowzerp , what with the fixation on David Haye !!!

Personally I agree with both of ye...
Calzaghe is a story of potential ,... of what could have been. We shall never know what heights Calzaghe could have reached to.
He was so over-protected during his prime , now he's 36 or 37 or something , and is looking to fight even older has-beens that are living off their achievements a decade ago.

As for haye , it's just like any Brittish fighter , they always get over-hyped.
    Khan more than Haye though......

Anyway , Pacquiao has just moved up to lightweight , Calzaghe last fought at light heavyweight !
Is it right to have them in the same category as potential opponent for Oscar ?

I would say Calzaghe was untested tha over-protected in his prime.
He fought the best Super-Middleweights available bar Ottke(which was never a feasible fight to make), Hopkins turned him down despite a more than reasonable offer(which Hopkins team had asked for) and Jones had no need for Calzaghe back then.

Jones has said Calzaghe wasn't worth the risk for the reward but Joe was never really on Roy's radar and you can't blame Roy for that. It's extremely likely he would have beaten Calzaghe but the fight wouldn't have been a blowout and probably would have been described as a poor performance from Roy if Calzaghe won a few rounds simply because Calzaghe was unknown in America.

Oscar was as I stated earlier, a 140 lb fighter at peak and would never have been a
welter/super/middle in the days of Hearns and Hagler and Leonard. Oscar wasn't the force above 147 that he was below 147. He still would have been great at 135-140 in any era. Cal would never have been a champ in the Toney and Jones prime era or even HAGLER era, though he was 160 lb

Oscar beat sweet pea and many say he beat TiTo....

Dela fighting Calzaghe is plain silly, Oscar can fight at 154 but against the smaller guys in the division remember Joe struggles to make the super middleweight.

Some of you guys need to put the crack pipe away. I like Joe and Oscar but saying that Joe is clearly better than Dela when he has only really proven himself in the last few years is stupid.

l4l Oscar is a level above Joe and his level of competition proves that.

    BTW
Oscar fighting Pac is a terrible idea for Pac. Oscar will walk him down and destroy him over 12. The size difference is just to great.

Who should he fight? That is the question. The problem is Dela runs out of gas after 6 and that would be his down fall against Cotto and Margarito.

oscars last fight i wouldnt want him to fight pac,its a complete mismatch

the whole reason floyd retired before their fight was he knew he would loose imop
    id like to see

I tend to agree and it's not beyond Oscar to beat both guys. Both would be a hell of a fight to go out on.
