    Hi All
I can't get access to certain web sites on my machine in either firefox or IE7. Sites like my gmail, google will load but won't search and facebook wont load. Theres a few work related sites that won't load either.......
    Any ideas oh benevolent ones?

    HB

Edit : Did a Malware removal with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and found a load of Trojans....removed them, rebooted and they're all back when I scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again. How can this be happenning.
I have my gmail working now but facebook will load but won't sign in and google is ok.
The other work related sites still won't load......

    Cheers

    Well Spyware Terminator found nothing!!!
    Really odd.
Might have to bring it up with support, though will have to trawl through the folders and ensure theres nothing "non-legal" lying around :)

Can you unload Symantec (kill it via task manager even) and try again?
It probably has web filtering enabled.

What's the error you get in IE/Firefox?

Can you try http://69.63.176.140 ? (Facebook)

    Try this:

    Open (With Notepad) c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

See are any of the sites your trying to visit on this list. Its the "blacklist" for Windows and it won't open any of the sites on it. All you get is "Cannot load page error"

"Blacklist" eh? I thought it was just the hosts file for manaully defining hostnames to IP's. :p

Well, if you read the file it maps, what some may consider dodgy sites, to the local host 127.0.0.1 which for most people will result in a "Page Not Found" error. Hence Windows saves you from there content. (In theory ;) )

I know SpyBot can blacklist some sites e.g. Commission Junction affiliate links.

    Worth a go! :)

Some applications may be adding those but its not a black list as such it just maps names to IP's manually. Very handy if you dont want to or cannt use a DNS server for certin IP's

Its a pretty poor way to blacklist as well as it wont stop direct linking to the IP address.

Black list was probably the wrong word, but the problem sounds something simular to what I went through. Try direct IP linking.

Some anti virus or spyware programs do flag changes to the hosts file as well.

Yeah they should do because a dodgy program could add www.boards.ie (for example) to the hosts file and point it to some other site that was mocked up to look loke boards and when you go to login they capture your username and password.

The user would ne none the wiser.

I know yeah but just saying as if his host file was edited to redirect to localhost then his av would pick it up.
