Do Customs ever hold items?

I ordered an mp3 player from an American seller on eBay and paid for it 3 weeks ago

I have contacted the seller and he has said to check with customs, just wondering do customs always release items when they check them? I thought they give them back to an Post and they collect the charges?

The seller has very good feedback for similar items

This is often the case, yes. They can sometimes hold items for several weeks too, so three weeks since shipping is not out of the realm of possibility. However, you won't be able to get any info on the items whereabouts without a tracking number.

It was only posted by standard post (but it is insured)

Can I call customs and ask is there anything due to be delivered to my address?

Anyone know how I can contact customs to see if they have this?

How will this insurance work for standard post with no delivery proof?

Not sure, but the seller gave me the option of paying extra for it

This common enough practice, but the package is not actually insured. The seller is presumably "insuring" it themselves. At this point, I'd start a Paypal dispute and start looking for a refund, or re-sending. Remember though that you can only start a Paypal dispute once, so do not close it until you actually receive the item, or have your refund. If you do close it, and the item doesn't turn up, Paypal will not intervene again, and you will loose the money.
