Was the sound working previously ? Have you formatted/reinstalled XP recently ?

You most likely need to download/instal drivers for your soundcard . If you right-click on My Computer , click Properties and then Hardware/Device Manager is there a yellow question mark beside an entry in Sound, Video and Game Controllers ? If so and if you have a CD that might have come with the mobo (or PC if it's shop/manufacturer purchased) right-click on the marked device and select Update Driver under the driver tab .
If you dont have such a CD then post back with as much info as possible (mobo model/PC model/Operating System) .
