I was speaking with a recruiter today as I am inquiring after some part time work which would allow me to continue my studies and he told me jobs like this rarely come up.

I have a PC maintenance, CCNA and FETAC Level 6 certification, is there any hope for 2 or 3 days a week in IT/helpdesk/broadband support?

Extremely unlikely in a part-time capacity to be honest. Shift work is often available though? I know it sucks- I did the whole helpdesk support thing for 4 years while in college, it nearly killed me.

    I know Eircom.net used to employ part-timers.

I think their recruitment is via a company called "Stream" now?

I went for an interview last Thursday for some part time work. Evening and weekend work was available.

Evening as in 6pm-10pm. I don't know if they are still looking for part time staff though but I was the only one out of 15 looking for part time....

*EDIT* It was stream yes :).

    Nice one.

How did you apply for the job, i.e. are the positions advertised online or anything like that?

The job was advertised online under an ad for Stream. I only found out it was for Eircom when they mailed me.

BTW: On the ad I responded to their was a space to write a cover letter. Make it a good one :).

Do you have a link? I can only find stream recruitment UK and stream.ie seems to be a solutions company.

Stream International don't have a number for their offices in Ireland on their site or Golden Pages. I rang Eircom head office and they put me through to Capita recruitment who told me I need to reach the Stream office in East Point but the person answering the phones at head office can't put me through without a name.

What the recruiter said, is actually not quite true. Avoid the agencies like the plague.

An agency can not make a commision for recruiting to a part time job. So they won't put you forward for one.

Agencies always lie. Not telling the truth is what they do for a living.

It's actually easier for some one studying part time to get a support job. (your easier to fire, so they're more likely to hire you. And none of the mini managers see you as competition)

Try contacting Stream or conduit directly. To get work from BT you need to go through Manpower,,,,,,,,, so they're not going to give you part time work, even though BT management would like part time workers,,, they're stupid enough to waste money on an agency.

The agencies are scum. Most people would be very shocked to learn that the recruitment specialists they meet in them have little or no education, have no idea what their doing either, couldn't tell from your CV if your a qualified network engineer or a qualified janitor. They're so thick they use software to do number counts of word on your CV for words like unix, ccna, etc --

If employers and applicants weren't so gullible, agencies wouldn't exist.

I am lucky thus far in the way that I was able to deal with Stream directly.
