well its either your internet is slow or youtube is having problems. nothing else is going to cause it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

could be your net connection. 1mbit is not all that fast in fairness. you have to remember you share that with other BT customers (ask them about their Contention Rate) it may very well have to do with a few BT users in your area using Peer to Peer (P2P) filesharing.

check you connection speed using www.speedtest.net post results here....

I thought I was the only one having problems with you tube.

It's doing the same thing for me too, so i'd say the servers are not performing well for you tube.

    I have 3 mbit broadband and I'm getting a download speed of 2651 kbit/s

    Don't worry mate, you're not alone :)

    lets test this:

Thanks for the replys so far.Its still slow unfortunately.I know, as somone said, that 1mb isnt a very fast connection but for youtube anyway, it was atleast twice as fast as it is now a couple of weeks ago.Any more views from people experiencing the same problems very welcom....

I had a similar problem with my "3" mobile internet. On the first month was very fast and then slower then a slowest dial up (my testprogram some times can't to measured my upload speed it was so slow!)

Well the final connection is 54 mb/s wifi connected using the wireless modem BT sent me and a zyxel wireless adapter that BT also sent me.My wifi hasnt exactly been reliable lately but as long as it is connected(It sometimes disconnects randomly), the speed is fine.I have thought about repalcing the set up with 108mb/s wifi.Could this be the problem bearing in mind its finre for all other sites bar youtube??

Nope same tolerable slowness as always.

Is it a problem with the ads loading on the site? Look for ads from ad.doubleclick.net loading up.

    post your speedtest results.......
I count 3 people on here with youtube issues one has a slow connection, one has a decent connection speed and yourself so if you post your results we can get a better idea...........

The connection is not the problem. The problem lies with either:
    1. ISP throttling youtube
    2. the Youtube server that is streaming to you
Try reloading youtube a few times and try to get a different server streaming to you. The server name should be in the status bar in firefox, dunno about IE.

I only have IE-7 at the moment but i will also try firefox and safari if that can fix the problem. Thanks for the help

    2 little factoids

Youtube's bandwidth costs are estimated at approximately $1 million a day.
It is estimated that in 2007, YouTube consumed as much bandwidth as the entire Internet in 2000

Is Googlevideo the same? (Not sure if they use the same servers?)

In house I'm also have Wifi and running on speed 54Mb/s as you seen my measured values enough fast.
Many times some websites the provider -in this case the BT- slow down selectively what they want. For this reason also not running on full speed the P-P (filesharing) websites all of case!

The Edge have right as part 'cos not only tha Youtube need to pay for bandwidth as well as the internet provider. Also every supplier pay after the bandwidth not for the amount of up- and downloaded data! It's a very big different!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭swingking

You tube works perfectly for me now. I contacted my isp who told me to change the mtu settings on my modem to a lower number (1400) and this seems to have solved the problem.

    Edit:

Forget what I just said there, it's even worse now:mad:

Does anyone know if there is a mac version of that software

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

Thanks for that software. It accelerates the videos alright but it is a bit harder to find exactly what your looking for.Glad to see i'm not the only one having problems:rolleyes:, positron. It must be a BT thing. Its still unbelievably slow if i just go about trying to watch a video normally.I'm yet to try another browser but i think i'll try it and see what happens.I'm fairly pesimistic at this stage, though

I have BT 2meg connection and also have problems. I notice that sometimes if I open up a second video in a new browser window, it starts loading much faster than the first one, even though its a similar length.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

Thank you so much.I just tried that there and immediate success, it downloads at the speed i used to get a few weeks ago.I'm guessing it has something to do with using diferent youtube servers. Thanks again, i hope this lasts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

That VideoAccelerator did help the day I installed it - its still there on the status bar declaring its 'ready...' but isn't speeding up or buffering or anything..! Strange!

for opera users , there is a bug in version 9.51 that might be causing slowness on youtube i hear it's been fixed on the pre release of 9.52 but havent tried it yet , but i also hear that if your usuing a custom urlfilter.ini file to block major advert sites it has been known to cause some issues aswell. At least this is what i found to be the problem in my case as i tried
this in a barebones install of Firefox 3 and had no issues what so ever on the same compter and wireless connection on BT 3mb connection

I'm also on BT and regularly find you tube crawling. The bastards must be throttling it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 squirrel1970

if u live in the country ur csever could be slowing down ur mbs to get more constant coverage or if ur wireless u could be piggybacked apparently u can buy the decoder for web encription online for bout 50 or 70 dollars so if u were being piggybacked ur connection would be far slower

As others have stated, my connection to everything else is just fine. Problem is only with youtube.

My reading of that is that it will only tell you if your P2P traffic is throttled. Don't see how it could tell you whether access to a specific site is being interfered with. My torrent speed is usually fine.

"it isn't limited to BitTorrent or any other specific application."

still an alpha-phase piece of software however.

I'm on BT 2MB Broadband and Youtube is often very slow. One video can be ok and another is slow, so it does seem to be certain youtube servers.

Having a lot of trouble with BT of late - thinking of switching from them...

So everyone in this thread is a BT complaintiff?
