We tried setting this up last year but it didn't take off as much as we thought.

We're refocusing on alternative music, as well as comics and anime(for the nerdy types).

It's not going to be based in the college as much this time, but I thought it might appeal to alot of new students.

    Link doesn't work

Anyway I remember getting the e-mail about this last year and being honest it seemed to me to be a glorified Anime society. The initial descrition was also quite pretentious - it was like a scoiety where people could be alternative for the sake of being alternative. And on top of that, the word "nerdy" isn't exactly favourable.

Anyway I remember getting the e-mail about this last year and being honest it seemed to me to be a glorified Anime society. The point was we found Irish universities to be very homogenised and a lot of alternative interest that should be there isn't. Because of the fact that counter/sub culture types(the correct terms for "alternative" in general were so rare we had the idea to create something that both appeals to them, and those who may want somewhere to socialise outside of the pub(which is, in of itself, counter culture in Ireland).

Of course, as soon as you use the word "alternative" in Ireland, you'll get called alternative. I myself found I couldn't find any friends that shared my interests. I think it's pretty horrible that as soon as you try to get involved in something to change this, it's "pretentious". It's a subtle way of forcing everyone into the same social scene. The fact is there is a division between typical Irish pub culture(which most of the societies end up falling back on) and those who are outside of it. The distinction maybe shouldn't exist, but it does, and a lot of people aren't being catered to.

Either way, we're refocusing it for alternative music, as well as comics and anime on the side.
